What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic position at City of Clermont?
This position performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of the City's fleet including cars, trucks, heavy trucks, and diesel trucks as well as other City equipment. Work is performed under general supervision.
This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply.
Per Florida Statute 295.065, certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, receive preference and priority, and that certain servicemembers may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled.
- Maintains City vehicles and equipment (police vehicles, sanitation trucks, heavy equipment, fire equipment, diesel repairs and pumps, small engines, power tools, chain saws, etc.) of various sizes in a safe operating condition by diagnosing needed repairs.
- Performs preventative maintenance on assigned City vehicles and equipment.
- May fabricate metal or parts as well as perform welding functions.
- Effectively applies technical knowledge to solve a range of problems.
- Makes decisions regarding efficient and cost-effective ways to perform job responsibilities.
- Maintains work area and tools in a clean, orderly fashion.
- May order and stock supplies, tires, and parts; and maintain related storage area.
- Assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment and in other duties as appropriate.
- Ensures that the City's vehicles and equipment meets safety standards and related laws.
- Maintains related work documentation and records.
- Maintain all licenses, certifications, etc. as well as continues to learn new techniques and methodologies related to the field.
- May perform related errands such as picking up/delivering parts or delivering fuel.
- Will be placed on emergency call (Holidays) or work after hours.
- Performs all work in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures, regulations and standards of safety and quality. Ensures the timely completion of all assignments, and provides courteous and prompt customer service.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least three (3) years mechanical experience in automotive / truck repair.
- Valid Florida's Driver's License
- Prefer completion of mechanical school or accredited technical school.
- Within six (6) months of hire, obtains: A. S. E. certified air conditioning and recovery service.
- Obtain a Class "B" Commercial Florida Driver's Permit with an airbrake endorsement within three (3) months from date of hire and obtain a Class "B" Commercial Florida Driver's License within six (6) months from date of hire.
- Obtain FEMA IS100 and IS700 within six (6) months of employment.
- Continual light work and occasional heavy work.
- Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over).
- Requires frequent walking and standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, and bending.
- Good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
- Good eyesight, hearing, and speech.
- Regular driving of vehicle.
- Wears Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
Works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions (heat/cold) for extended periods of time. Exposed to construction, water/wastewater, and other site hazards including, but not limited to: bright/dim lights, dust/pollen, intense noise, vibration, fumes/noxious odors, toxic/caustic chemicals, electrical shock, heights of 70 feet or more, disease/pathogens, and moving machinery. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required.
