Job Overview
The Supervisors duties include operation and maintenance of overhead and underground electric distribution lines. Other duties include planning and controlling the operation, maintenance, and safety aspect of the electric system. Directly supervises up to ten (10) employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include assisting in interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, work; evaluating performance; rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this position. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.

  • Delegates functional activities to workers and establishes supervisory schedules and responsibilities to ensure quality and timeliness of work.
  • Investigates, evaluates, and determines best application of new developments in electric power industry, and devises other means of securing maximum efficiency of personnel and equipment.
  • Assists with budget recommendations and makes relevant decisions in order to keep facilities and system operation current with economic changes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma/GED required; plus classification as a lineman, journeyman lineman preferred. Must have excellent written and oral skills to deal with the public and other employees. Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information to customers, supervisors, and city employees. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Certificates recognizing successful completion of accepted lineman training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Considerable independent judgment and discretion is involved when representing the City in communications with the public and employees.
  • Must possess supervisory skills.
  • Must have mechanical and technical skills in specific area of responsibilities.
  • Must be capable of prioritizing work tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Capable of meeting deadlines.
  • Must be familiar with the operation of various hand tools, chain saw, clipper stick, climbing hooks, hydraulic saw and drill, line truck, and book truck.
  • Must be available to be on call after working hours, weekends, and holidays.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Depending on the functional area of assignment, tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort usually involving some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of weight (up to 50 pounds). May involve some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, walking or standing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks are regularly performed inside without potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence and/or disease, or pathogenic substances.
