What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Development Intern position at City of Clive (IA)?
Under general supervision of the Senior Planner, the Community Development Intern will assist in fulfilling a variety of community development functions. The intern will be expected to work with the Community Development Department co-workers to accomplish various planning and zoning assignments and activities, and perform other duties as required. The primary intent of the position is to provide learning and professional development opportunities to an individual interested in pursuing a career in the planning and community development field.
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
- Assist with short- and long-range planning.
- Assist with the review of development applications and zoning permits, completing reports, and assist with the Planning and Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustment meetings.
- Review and draft technical documents and staff reports.
- Research and draft zoning ordinance amendments based on sound planning principles.
- Correspond with outside agencies and others as necessary; attends meetings as necessary.
- Completion of a variety of GIS projects and tasks including editing, managing, and analyzing data, as well as creating graphics and display information.
- Continue development as a future planner, learning about new technologies, practical application of planning principles, and improving operations and efficiency.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Enrollment in a program seeking a degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Geography or similar field.
- Ability to use logical thinking to solve problems with several concrete or abstract variables; ability to communicate technical solutions to non-technical people.
- Ability to perform arithmetic, algebraic, geometric and statistical calculations as necessary to review and analyze data.
- Ability to compose original correspondence; ability to write technical reports and policy documents.
- Ability to present ideas and findings clearly and concisely in written, oral and/or graphic form.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with superiors, co-workers, and the public.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and software such as Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to perform all job duties safely and in accordance with applicable rules, guidelines, policies and training.
- Experience and/or interest with ArcGIS products is preferred, though not required.

Shall possess or be able to obtain a valid Iowa Driver's License and have a good driving record for the past three (3) years.

Environmental Conditions:
The work is performed both inside and outside which includes seasonal exposure to cold and heat. The worker is also exposed to darkness or poor lighting, dirt/dust, fumes/odors, moving machinery, noise, vibration, visual strain, wetness/humidity, working on uneven ground, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, fire hazards, traffic hazards, and bodily injury. Also, the work may expose the employee to unpleasant social situations, and require the employee to work irregular hours.
