DEFINITION
Perform a variety of accounting clerical duties involving financial record keeping and/or transactions including accounts receivable and accounts payable; respond to requests and inquiries; and perform related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Under supervision to perform support duties for the Accounting staff. Incumbents report to and take directions from the Senior Accountant. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Work is reviewed periodically upon completion and while in progress. Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in work to their supervisor for instructions.

Post data to various ledgers, registers, journals, and logs according to established account classifications and procedures; write and post journal entries; perform monthly reconciliations; gather, tabulate, and proofread statistical or financial data; accept and/or verify collections, receipts, and other financial data; perform a variety of general clerical duties including maintaining files and records; operate basic business equipment and a personal computer utilizing Microsoft products and the City's financial system; and perform related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

  • Business Administration student with an accounting option or in a closely related accounting field with a 3.00 GPA minimum from an accredited college or university;
  • Preferably a Junior standing or (completing last semester of Sophomore studies) from an accredited college or university;
  • Completion of Accounting 4A & 4B (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university;
  • Enrolled or will enroll for Fall 2025 or completion of Intermediate Accounting 120A (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university.


QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation;
  • Basic accounting and bookkeeping procedures;
  • Methods, practices, and terminology used in financial and statistical record keeping;
  • Modern office methods and procedures;
  • Filing systems and procedures;
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Perform accounting clerical work;
  • Process and maintain financial and statistical records;
  • Operate a computer and standard office equipment accurately and efficiently;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing;
  • Write legibly;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of assigned duties.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Strength: Light work-lifting, carrying and/or pushing 25 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds;
  • Work is primarily sedentary.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants must meet each qualification for the position at the time of application submission. All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position. Selection shall be made from those applicants who submit a complete employment application, supplemental questionnaire, and all required documents, meet the position requirements, receive a passing score on an initial application screening, and receive a qualifying score on an oral interview, weighted 100%.  Oral interviews for the position will be administered in the City of Clovis.  As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a medical examination, a drug/alcohol screen, and a background investigation. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.

  2.  If you have completed a course equivalent to Accounting 4A & 4B or have completed or  are currently enrolled in a course equivalent to Intermediate Accounting 120A you must submit the college course description showing that the course(s) are equivalent to Accounting 4A & 4B and/or Intermediate Accounting 120A. Equivalent college course descriptions are only required for courses other than Accounting 4A, 4B, and Intermediate Accounting 120A.
