What are the responsibilities and job description for the PARKS MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST Ned Houk Park (NHP) position at City of Clovis, NM?
This is a full time position working 40 hours per week under the direct supervision of the Ned Houk Park Manager. This position involves manual labor of a routine nature in the maintenance, repair, and construction of park grounds and improvements. This position normally works from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday with infrequent overtime required during summer months.
**This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.**
- Operates tractors and other large equipment equipped with attachments such as mowers, fertilizer spreaders and front-end loaders.
- Operates both manual and automatic irrigation engines to supply water for storage tanks, earth ponds and park grounds.
- Sets quick coupler impact sprinklers for parks water sprinkler system.
- Operates various hand and power tools for structural or equipment repair and for planting, pruning or trimming of trees, shrubs and lawns.
- Applies fertilizers and insecticide according to instructions to lawns, shrubs and trees.
- Manual digging is required in plumbing repairs, pipeline trenching, tree stump removal and for the ball and burlap of trees and shrubbery.
- Mends and repairs range land fence lines, gates and guardrails in parks.
- Care and feeding of park livestock; cleaning of stock tanks, animal pens and grounds.
- Paints fences, out buildings, museum equipment, and other park improvements.
- Maintains parks (mowing, weed cutting, picking up trash, dumping barrels, cleaning bathroom facilities, picnic shelters/tables/grills), and improvements in an attractive, clean and sanitary condition.
- Use and care in chlorinating of public drinking water facilities, testing and sampling of water for microbiological laboratory.
- Assists in the damage control of vegetation through eradication of rodents in parks and rangeland.
- Assists with minor repair of park equipment, machinery and improvements.
- Assists with the construction of new park improvements such as sprinkler systems picnic facilities and playground equipment.
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the Park Manager.
Minimum Qualifications:
- One (1) year experience in the operation and maintenance of lawn care equipment.
- Experience which demonstrates knowledge of landscape, construction and maintenance is preferred.
Licenses and Certificates:
- Equivalent of higher of a New Mexico Class “D” driver’s license. (CDL preferred)
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Basic knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines. Basic electrical and plumbing knowledge.
Skills in:
- Safe operation of small equipment; hand and power tools and lawn care equipment.
Ability to:
- Perform functions with minimal supervision; understand and follow basic safety precautions, rules and regulations, establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationship with others.
Physical Requirements:
- Moderately heavy work involving frequent standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling and squatting; pushing, pulling and lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds.
Working Conditions:
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services.
- Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies.
- Essential duties are predominantly performed outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
- Employee is exposed to airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, and extreme temperatures, travel from site to site, work around traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- Use of safety shoes, glasses and other equipment is required.
- Due to the environmental sensitivity and requirements of operation of the facility the above milestones must be met to continue employment.
