DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs specialized duties in the field of Drug Education and Prevention. Duties include assisting in planning and executing school and community drug abuse prevention (education) programs; advising and guiding educational institutions, community groups, and organizations in developing and executing Drug Abuse Prevention projects and activities; municipal code enforcement; and performs related work as required.

Examples of Duties

The Drug Education Community Service Officer will provide drug education during the school year and will work in conjunction with Clovis Unified School District employees. When school is not in session, the Drug Education Community Service Officer will conduct municipal code enforcement within the city and assist with daily responsibilities within the Youth Services Division.

Typical Qualifications

LICENSE REQUIRED

  • Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License and a good driving record.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education :

  • High school diploma or equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade;
  • Completion of sixty (60) semester units from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience :

  • At least three (3) years of experience involving public contact work.
  • Desirable Experience :

  • Experience working for a law enforcement agency.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of :

  • Considerable knowledge of the education system and community organizations;
  • Considerable knowledge of the public education theory and practice;
  • Communication, presentation, and organization methods and skills;
  • Drug prevention and education;
  • Strong interpersonal and human relations skills;
  • Strong community relations and / or communication skills;
  • Proficient use of Microsoft and PowerPoint;
  • Basic English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • Modern office equipment, procedures, and preparation of business reports;
  • Research techniques, methods, and procedures;
  • Applicable State laws, City ordinances, procedures, and other regulations governing the department or area of assigned responsibility.
  • Ability to :

  • Interact effectively with professional teachers, students, and community leaders;
  • Supervise and monitor Drug Demand Reduction projects;
  • Organize school and community education activities and lecture to students, teachers, and community leaders on related subjects;
  • Plan and implement school and community intervention projects;
  • Operate a police radio;
  • Understand, interpret, and explain a wide variety of laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations;
  • React quickly and calmly while exercising good judgment in all situations;
  • Analyze situations and develop effective courses of action;
  • Communicate effectively and professionally orally, in writing, and electronically in a clear, comprehensive manner;
  • Perform difficult and complex assignments involving independent judgment;
  • Follow oral and written instructions;
  • Inspire public confidence through personal integrity, appearance, and actions;
  • Use discretion and good judgment in handling sensitive and confidential information;
  • Instruct the general public about crime prevention programs;

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Job functions are performed in office, classroom, and outdoor environments;
  • Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment, kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, to retrieve and store files and materials, and lifting light objects;
  • Strength : light work-lifting, carrying, and / or pushing 25 pounds with frequent lifting and / or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds in the office environment;
  • Other physical requirements include clear verbal communication, feeling, finger dexterity, frequent grasping, and holding, reaching, talking, and balancing;
  • Work in all weather conditions with the ability to work outdoors when over 100 degrees in the summer and the cold and rain during the winter months;
  • Working conditions may include enclosed and confined environments with no windows, ability to attend periodic evening meetings or meetings outside scheduled shifts, may be assigned to work any shift, and may be required to work weekends and holidays.

    Applicants must meet each qualification for the position by the deadline date. All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position. Those candidates who best meet the needs of the operations may be invited to participate in an oral examination that will be weighted 100%. Examinations and department interviews for the position will be administered in the City of Clovis. Applicants receiving a passing score may be placed on an eligible list for a period of up to one (1) year. As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a Personal History Questionnaire, polygraph or voice stress examination, extensive background investigation, psychological examination, medical examination, and drug / alcohol screening . Possession of a valid California Driver's License and good driving record will be required prior to hire. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.
