Starting salary of $46,137.16, plus a generous benefit package including PTO, 11 paid holidays, Pension, Insurance, and more.
Under general supervision, performs general duty law enforcement work to protect lives, property and rights of the public on an assigned shift for the City Police Department. Work involves answering complaint calls and patrolling the City in an official vehicle to deter crime or apprehend violators or suspects; investigating traffic accidents, and investigating and securing crime scenes. Employee is also responsible for testifying in court, and assisting fire rescue units as needed. Employee must exercise tact and firmness in frequent public contact. Employee must also exercise independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned tasks. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Reports to a Shift Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Patrols an assigned area of the City; monitors radio calls; inspects troublesome areas and checks security of business establishments; answers complaint calls and investigates crimes and disturbances; interviews witnesses; gathers evidence; interrogates suspects and makes arrests; prepares investigation reports.
- Investigates accidents; performs first aid; secures and clears accident scenes; directs traffic.
- Serves summons and warrants, explaining briefly the meaning of the papers served and making arrests when necessary.
- Appears in court as witness to give testimony; may confer with supervisory personnel for advice in complex cases.
- Monitors vehicle speeds with radar; conducts criminal and driving checks; issues citations or warnings.
- Prepares various reports and forms such as case files, offense reports, accident reports, tow sheets and cards, property vouchers, lab requests, etc.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Trains recruit officers; supervises activities on duty; reviews paperwork; assists in learning city and state legal procedures.
- Escorts funeral processions, parades, and public figures
- May assist disabled motorists with simple repair work such as changing flat tires, unlocking doors, etc.
Performs other related work as required.
Qualifications
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Certification as a police officer by the Criminal Justice Training Section of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
- Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.
- Must successfully complete psychological testing, polygraph testing, background investigation, and other inquiries to determine employment suitability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be able to respond quickly and be physically capable of responding to emergency situations and/or situations involving physical confrontation; must have the stamina to endure sustained physical exertion and/or endure periods of duty under unfavorable or life threatening situations. Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including two-way radios, computers, typewriters, calculators, copiers, and facsimile machines. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Requires ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, bending, stooping, crouching, or running on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. Physical demand requirements are for Heavy Work.
