What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker II - Grounds position at City of Cocoa?
Under supervision of the Parks and Grounds Supervisor, performs semi-skilled manual work in construction and maintenance activities and services. Maintenance Worker II-PW/Leisure Services must consistently perform senior level, semi-skilled work on Public Works equipment, plants, buildings, and grounds.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates power mowers, edgers, trimmers, and other pieces of equipment used in landscaping and roadside maintenance.
- Operates tractors in landscaping projects and roadside clearing.
- Works on irrigation installation and repairs.
- The majority of position duties are required to be performed on-site.
- Works on chemical spraying for pest control, weed control, and fertilizes.
- Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared or undeclared emergency.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of the methods, tools, pieces of equipment and materials used in Public Works general maintenance, utility construction and building structures.
- Skill in and safe use of all hand tools and equipment in performance of all work tasks.
- Skill in operating trucks, concrete saws, chain saws, backhoes, and other pieces of equipment of the trade.
- Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions and be accident free.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED certificate with two (2) years' experience in the Public Works field; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid state of Florida Class "B" CDL driver's license or must obtain a Class "B" CDL driver license temporary permit issued by the Florida Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles within 45 days of employment and successful licensure within 120 days of obtaining temporary permit.
The work is generally very heavy and may require exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, or slippery surfaces.
- Climbing: Frequently ascends or descends ladders, stairs, scaffolding, or ramps.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires the ability to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Work is performed primarily in an out-of-door environments with exposure to the wind, rain, cold, and heat.
