What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic II position at City of Cocoa?

JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Assistant Manager and/or Field Operations Manager, performs skilled work in a high-volume shop in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engines and equipment and systems related to both including but not limited to multi-cylinder engines, carburation and fuel injection systems, pneumatic, hydraulic, starting and charging systems. The Mechanic II performs routine maintenance and parts replacement on vehicles and equipment as well as upfit and renovation projects.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs general maintenance, diagnosis and repair of vehicles, backhoes, tractors, loaders, graders, crane trucks and other related equipment, other gasoline and diesel engines and small engine equipment. 
  • Repairs or replaces equipment such as, but not limited to brakes, lights, alternators, starters, pumps, hoses, and belts.
  • Service vehicles and equipment per established maintenance schedules
  • Repairs and maintains small equipment and power tools.
  • Skilled in using tools and equipment related to welding and fabrication.
  • Secure estimates and requisitions related to procurement of goods and services related to equipment maintenance and fabrication.
  • Prepare and maintain records related to equipment maintenance schedules and purchasing.
  • Skilled in maintenance related computer software.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers, city officials, the general public and representatives of other agencies.
  • Effective communication to relay concepts and ideas to coworkers and the chain of command.  
  • Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared or undeclared emergency.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
  • Considerable knowledge of the construction, assembly and maintenance of a variety of trucks and equipment.
  • Skill in the methods and practices used to repair, upfit and renovate light to heavy equipment especially as applied to the mechanical operation.
  • Skill in use of specialized tools including but not limited to plasma cutters, cutting torch, welding rigs, multi-meters, micrometers, calipers and gauges. 
  • Skill in minor and some major repairs to autos, trucks, tractors, small engine equipment and construction equipment. 
  • Ability to diagnose issues and defects in all types of equipment and either personally or instruct subordinates in approved techniques to perform repairs or procedures related to maintenance, upfit and renovation.
  • Ability to perform road tests and other diagnostic methods to ensure the effectiveness of repair and maintenance procedures. 
  • Ability to use and care for all hand and power tools used in the trade. 
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, blueprints, and diagrams. 
High school diploma or GED certificate with minimum three (3) years-documented experience in the field; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is generally medium and may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, or slippery surfaces. 
  • Climbing: Frequently ascends or descends ladders, stairs, scaffolding, or ramps. 
  • Crawling: Ability to frequently move on hands and knees or hands and feet. 
  • Crouching: Ability to frequently bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine. 
  • Feeling: Ability to perceive attributes of objects by touch. 
  • Dexterity: Primarily with fingers, as in picking, pinching, or typing. 
  • Grasping: Applying pressure with the whole hand. 
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working with the whole hand. 
  • Hearing: Ability to hear and understand at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
  • Kneeling: Ability to frequently bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. 
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and move objects 
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions. 
  • Pulling / Pushing: Ability to occasionally move objects up to 100 pounds. 
  • Reaching: Ability to frequently extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. 
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers. 
  • Speaking / Talking: Ability to communicate clearly, accurately and concisely through speech.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time. 
  • Stooping: Ability to frequently bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. 
  • Visual Acuity: Ability to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading, operating motor vehicles; including color, depth perception, and field vision.
  • Walking: Ability to walk long distances to perform tasks and to move from one job site to another.
