Job Overview
The Utility Operator performs semi-skilled duties related to the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of the City potable water system. The position works on distribution pump stations, production wells, storage facilities, service lines, meters, infrastructure installation and replacement, routine maintenance, and responding to public inquiries and problems. This is an entry-level position and works directly under the supervision of the Utility Supervisor with direction from a certified water operator to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements. The position requires obtaining a Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements and flagger certification within six months of hire. Some water line construction experience is preferred. This is an on-call position. The position works in a public building and outdoor environment with exposure to adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of power tools and light and heavy equipment.
- Responds to problems and customer questions, requests, comments, and complaints in the field and provides information to office staff;
- Performs installation, maintenance, operation, and repair duties on the City potable water system, including but not limited to pump stations, production wells, storage facilities, buildings and grounds, water mains, service lines and connections, water meters, and related infrastructure;
- Uses and maintains a variety of motor vehicles, hand tools, power tools and light construction equipment;
- Participates in work zone safety procedures including flagging and setting up warning signs, as required by state and federal regulations;
- Responds to questions and comments from management, supervisors, co-workers and citizens in a courteous, thorough and timely manner;
- Performs time management and scheduling functions, meets deadlines, and sets project priorities;
- Maintains strict confidentiality of all matters;
- Assists other City departments and employees as needed or requested;
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:
- On call to respond to emergency situations;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED;
- Idaho Class B CDL license with airbrake and tanker endorsements required within six months of hire;
- Idaho Water Operator Certification Class I or higher within one year of hire required;
- Flagger certification within six months of hire required;
- CPR and First Aid certification within six months of hire required;
- Some (6 months) waterline construction and maintenance experience is preferred; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
Must be able to pass pre-hire and random drug tests.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $22.37 - $23.49 per hour
