Description

This position monitors and enforces the City FOG (Fats, Oils, and Grease) program to include all Food service establishments within the route) by monitoring the discharge of Fats, Oils and Grease into the City sanitary sewer system. This position also participates in public outreach and education as directed. The incumbent works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

The work is considered heavy in nature and involves walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, crawling, kneeling, reaching, and lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting between 50 and 75 pounds of force on a recurring basis and over 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: balancing, kneeling, pulling, pushing, talking, and visual acuity.

Work environment may involve exposure to fire hazards, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, airborne particles, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, explosives; and is dynamic that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Monitors and enforces the City FOG program to include all Food service establishments within the route, public outreach, conducts investigations, and maintains tracking
  • Participates in public outreach and education as directed
  • Collects samples for laboratory testing and prepares related reports
  • Maintains and updates FOG databases regularly
  • Assists with public education efforts
  • Inspects commercial grease interceptors/traps
  • Attends training, meetings, seminars and conferences as appropriate to stay abreast of legislation and trends related to FOG and other subject matter as directed
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment
  • Performs inspections of commercial grease interceptors/traps within the City sanitary sewer collection system operations for compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Identifies sources of excess Fats, Oils, and Grease and effectively addresses violations
  • May be required to work outside of the regular work schedule to include on call, holidays, nights, and weekends when necessary
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance from customers and the general public regarding areas of responsibility
  • Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, attending meetings, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc
  • Attends meetings, training, conferences, seminars, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Requires experience in utility field work or closely related field; Preference may be given to applicants who have experience in food services, plumbing, a municipal pretreatment program, wastewater laboratory, or industrial or municipal treatment processes
  • Must possess a Level DWastewater Collection System Operator certification or be able to obtain Level DWastewater Collection System Operator certification within two (2) years from date of hire or promotion. Consideration may be given to applicant with Environmental Systems Operator certification
  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic mathematics
  • Knowledge of personal computer equipment with skill in the use of Microsoft Office 2000 preferred, utilizing Outlook, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software programs
  • Ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems; and ability to use highly technical computer applications, such as XC2
  • Ability to provide information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment
  • Ability to gather, organize, analyze, examine or evaluate data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information
  • Ability to perform skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem-solving
  • Ability to read technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form
  • Ability to perform professional-level work dealing with data, people, and technology that relates to administrative, technical, scientific, engineering, accounting, legal, or managerial skills; and
  • Ability to make decisions that impact how the unit provides services and support to internal and external customers.
