Description
The Rapid Shelter Columbia Support Specialist will play a versatile role in supporting the daily operations of the shelter. This individual will be responsible for transporting residents, managing donation pick-ups and drop-offs, performing administrative tasks, and providing general support to staff. The role is designed to be flexible, adapting to the evolving needs of the shelter and its residents.
The work requires sitting for extended periods while driving, sometimes over long distances. The position also involves regularly lifting and carrying items, such as donations or supplies, weighing up to 25 pounds. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: hearing, mental acuity, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work requires professional dress and appearance with the ability to make a positive first impression.
Work environment is dynamic that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
Essential Job Functions
- Safely transport residents to and from appointments, employment, and other necessary locations. Coordinate transportation schedules and maintain accurate records of trips;
- Pick up and drop off donations to and from the shelter. Assist in organizing, sorting, and distributing donations to residents or storage areas as needed;
- Provide assistance to shelter staff as needed, including helping with resident check-ins, distributing supplies, assisting with events, and addressing other day-to-day operational needs; and
- All other duties assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate degree preferred);
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record;
- Prior experience in a shelter or social service environment is preferred but not required;
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment;
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic functions and goals of a homeless shelter, including the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness and the services typically provided;
- Ability to Handle Sensitive Situations and interacting respectfully with residents, maintaining confidentiality;
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with residents, staff, and community partners both verbally and in writing;
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and ensure timely completion of responsibilities in a fast-paced environment;
- Knowledge of safe driving practices and vehicle maintenance requirements;
- Ability to use standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office) for administrative tasks, including data entry, email communication, and maintaining records; and
- Ability to adjust to changing priorities and take on new tasks as the needs of the shelter and residents evolve.
