The purpose of this job is to perform semi-skilled manual labor related to street repair and maintenance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description
  • Reconstructs or repairs pavement.


  • Performs general labor duties.

  • Performs maintenance and work zone duties including setting up and taking down work zones, acting as a flagger, and other labor-oriented duties.

  • Operates specialized motorized equipment and tools to perform tasks.

  • Mows designated areas.

  • Cleans and maintains building and equipment.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.


  • Some experience with manual labor.

Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license

Knowledge of:
  • Standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment related to street repair and maintenance.


  • Safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of motorized equipment and hand/power tools.

  • Columbia geography and streets.

Skill in:
  • Operating motorized equipment and performing routine equipment maintenance.

  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.

  • Applying active listening and asking questions for understanding.

Ability to:
  • Use and maintain hand and power tools.

  • Accept guidance and training from co-workers and supervisors.

  • Recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Maintain effective working relationships.

  • Obtain Commercial Driver’s License.

  • Ability to work on-call and respond at all hours of the day/night.

  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Incumbent required to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with hands/arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb/balance, operate mechanical equipment, and move up and down from/to sitting position on the floor.

  • Incumbents required to have clarity of vision and ability to identify and distinguish colors on signs and flags.

  • Incumbents required to perform work that requires repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement.

Starting Salary
$15.30/hr - $17.23/hr; Commensurate w/Training & Experience
