Job Description Summary

The purpose of this job is to lead an assigned work group involved in the construction, maintenance, and renovation of city buildings, facilities, or property. Trains employees and ensures the safety and quality of work group operations.   • Leads and coordinates the work of a group of employees; assigns and prioritizes tasks; guides employees with instruction or advice on tasks and assignments.
  • Performs skilled work of assigned work group.
  • Schedules routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Assists supervisors in coordinating activities.
  • Adheres to safety standards.
  • Operates a wide variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment associated with the construction trades.
  • Installs mechanical (HVAC), electrical, and plumbing components.
  • Performs concrete, masonry, framing, roofing, and general carpentry work.
  • Performs metal fabrication using a wide variety of equipment such as welders, cutting torches, plasma cutters, and hand tools.
  • Purchases tools, materials and supplies.
  • Performs snow removal and ice prevention.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in the construction industry.
  • Licenses or Certifications

  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no airbrake restriction within 6 months of hire.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position Knowledge of :

  • Standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of building trades.
  • Safety standards and precautions pertaining to maintenance and repair work.
  • Safety standards and precautions pertaining to operation and maintenance of a variety of equipment and tools.
  • Common business software applications such as Microsoft Office, Google Calendar, and Google Mail.
  • Skill in :

  • Operating and maintaining hand / power tools and motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Operating light, medium, and heavy construction equipment.
  • Estimating time and materials needed to complete jobs.
  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.

  • Incumbents required to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with hands / arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb / balance, operate mechanical equipment, and move up and down from / to sitting position on the floor.
  • Hours / Days 7 : 30 am – 4 : 00 pm Monday – Friday. Starting Salary $24.94 minimum per hour ($51,867 annually) Pay Grade 108 Number of Positions Available 1 Deadline to Apply 01 / 17 / 2025 Open Until Filled No Special Instructions to Applicants This is a construction position with the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department. Candidates must be able to perform construction work on new and existing buildings, shelters, aquatic facilities, and parks. This position performs a variety of construction trades including carpentry, concrete work, roofing, and masonry work. The Crew Leader – Construction position performs metal fabrication using a wide variation of equipment such as welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, and hand tools. Ideal candidates will be able to operate a wide variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment associated with the construction trades, as well as operate surveying equipment and laser levels necessary for grading and the construction of walkways and structures. During winter months when there is inclement weather, this position assists with snow removal in the park system. This position will also perform other related duties as assigned.

    Candidates should have a Class B Commercial Driver License with air brake endorsement or the ability to acquire within 6 months of hire.

    This is a full-time position with benefits and a minimum salary of $24.94 per hour.

    Position hours : 7 : 30am to 4pm Monday-Friday.

    Salary : $51,867
