This position supervises and participates in the work of skilled and semi-skilled crew members charged with horticultural maintenance; and performs related supervisory and technical work as required. The incumbent works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

The work is considered medium-to-heavy in nature and involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: climbing, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

Work environment may involve exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals; and involves critical situations that require major decisions involving people, resources, and property.
  • Supervises and participates in City landscape installation and maintenance projects;
  • Supervises skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled personnel engaged in landscaping activities; supervisory duties include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; acting on employee problems; allocating personnel; and recommending employee discipline;
  • Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers training, advice and assistance as needed;
  • Receives, coordinates and ensures the timely completion of assigned work orders;
  • Supervises and participates in general grounds keeping work, including but not limited to preparing soil for planting, installing landscape materials, watering plants and trees, pruning trees and shrubbery, removing weeds, mowing grass, applying pesticides and herbicides, etc.;
  • Assists in installing and maintaining irrigation systems and equipment;
  • Removes debris from sidewalks, streets and other paved surfaces;
  • Supervises the proper maintenance of assigned tools and equipment;
  • Responds and assists with emergency calls;
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a dump truck, bobcat, tiller, mowers, etc.; operates weed eaters, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, spray equipment and other power and hand tools as necessary to complete duties;
  • Prepares accurate and up-to-date records of work completed;
  • Assists with special projects as needed:
  • Performs all work in compliance with applicable policies and procedures, laws and regulations, and standards of quality and safety;
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: 
  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Three (3) years of relevant prior experience;
  • Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License;
  • Must have or be able to obtain South Carolina Pesticide Certification within one (1) year from date of hire or promotion.
  • Knowledge of basic algebra involving variables and formulas and/or basic geometry involving plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas and volumes, and/or computing discounts and interest rates;
  • Ability to coordinate or determine time, place or sequence of operations or activities based on analysis of data or information and may implement and report on operations and activities;
  • Ability to supervise or lead others by determining work procedures, assigning duties, maintaining harmonious relations and promoting efficiency;
  • Ability to lead, operate or repair complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as light or heavy construction equipment and trucks, plant equipment, shop equipment, etc.  Involves operations of limited scope;
  • Ability to perform supervisory work involving policy and guidelines, solving both people- and work-related problems;
  • Ability to read technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form;
  • Ability to perform clerical, manual or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure; and
  • Ability to take actions of others, requiring almost constant decisions affecting co-workers, customers, clients or others in the general public; works in a moderately fluid environment with guidelines and rules, but frequent variations from the routine.

Salary : $39,024 - $48,780
