The City of Concord's Recreation Services Department is seeking people to work for the City's Aquatics Program. Salary is negotiable based on experience:
  • Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I: $17.22 - $18.09/hour, with no experience
  • Lifeguard/Swim Instructor II: $18.54 - $19.48/hour, with a minimum of 2 seasons experience
An additional $1/hour pay differential is available when teaching swim classes.

The Aquatics Program:

The Concord Community Pool at 3501 Cowell Rd is one of the City’s most popular facilities, serving approximately 124,000 swimmers per year in our award winning learn to swim classes, our lap swim, recreational swim and water exercises programs, as well as serving as a place for many swim teams to practice. The pool is open year round, heated to a comfortable 80 degrees, and is 50 meters in length. The pool also boasts heated changing rooms and showers.

What you will be doing:

Under supervision, Lifeguard/Swim Instructors perform a variety of duties for the purpose of providing for water safety at Concord Community Pool. This includes organizing, coordinating, conducting, and instructing courses in water safety as well as supervision of the Concord Community Pool.

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I is distinguished from the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor II in that the II performs duties independently.    All positions are part time, limited service, and must be able to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, early morning, evening and weekend shifts when required, and attend weekly in-service trainings.  They must also be able to successfully complete Lifeguard Training provided by the City of Concord.

SELECTION PROCESS

  1. Submit a completed City of Concord application and the required supplemental question responses, online at www.cityofconcord.org/jobs. Please attach copies of relevant certificates to your application.
  2. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, and those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position will be invited to interview.
  3. Successful candidates will be provided a conditional offer of employment and must successfully complete a fingerprint check (more information below), TB testing, and the City's Lifeguard Certification Class (unless already certified by the American Red Cross).  Prerequisites for the Certification Class are as follows:
    • Minimum age of 15 years.
    • Successful completion of a swim-tread-swim sequence: Swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water only using legs. Swim 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or combination of both.
    • Successful completion of a timed event: Swim 20 yards, retrieve 10-pound brick from 10 feet below. Return to surface and swim 20 yards on back to return to the starting point, holding the brick at the surface with both hands. Exit the water without using ladder.

Conviction History:  If you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with the City of Concord.
