The Coon Rapids Police Reserve Unit consists of well-trained and dedicated volunteers who are focused on serving the needs of the community. Coon Rapids Police Reserve officers assist the Coon Rapids Police Department throughout the city in staffing and performing many non-sworn, non-enforcement functions.

Coon Rapids Police Reserve officers assist the Coon Rapids Police Department throughout the city in staffing and performing many non-sworn, non-enforcement, non-armed functions. Following the Reserve Officer training you will have an opportunity to participate in park patrol, security at Anoka Ramsey Community College as well as security for high school hockey games! These positions get paid $21.98 per hour!

A great way to gain experience and learn about exciting employment opportunities with the Coon Rapids Police Department. Law Enforcement students have an opportunity to earn tuition reimbursement after being employed for 6 months in good standing and who provide paid or unpaid service for a minimum of 250 hours per year. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in non-enforcement duties including but are not limited to : 4th of July events, Anoka Ramsey Community College security, hockey security, park patrol and Coon Rapids High School football games. The coon Rapids Police Reserve Unit also assists in emergencies and natural disasters in the community and around Minnesota.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and / or abilities required.

The requirements to join the reserve unit are :

  • Must be able to attend Reserve Academy held once a week for approximately 2 months.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen
  • Possess a valid Minnesota driver's license with a good driving record
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • Ability to walk, stand, run, lift and carry for extended periods of time if needed
  • Able and willing to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to complete / pass criminal history and background check
  • Pass an oral examination by a review board
  • Complete a probationary period
  • Attend a minimum of 3 out of 4 quarterly meetings
  • All reserve officers are required to volunteer a minimum of 100 hours per year at events in the community
  • Ability to work effectively and courteously with the public in essential.
  • Qualifications and Other Information

    The requirements to join the reserve unit are :

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and a United States citizen.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalency.
  • A valid driver's license is required to drive squad cars.
  • A background check will be completed on all applicants including law enforcement contacts, driver's license history and criminal background.
  • All reserve officers are required to attend three out of four meetings each year.
  • All reserve officers are required to volunteer a minimum of 100 hours per year at events in the community.
  • Ability to work effectively and courteously with the public is essential.
  • Position is not eligible for benefits.

    Are you eligible for veteran's preference points?The City of Coon Rapids operates under a point preference system, which awards points to qualified veterans to supplement their application. Ten points are granted to non-disabled veterans on open competitive examinations; 15 points are awarded if the veteran has a service connected compensable disability as certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA).To qualify for preference for a competitive exam, you must have a passing score for the position and be a qualified veteran. Qualified veteran means a citizen of the United States or a resident alien separated from active duty under honorable conditions from any branch of the United States armed forces : 1) after having served on active duty for 181 consecutive days; OR2) by reason of disability incurred while serving on active duty; OR3) who has met the minimum active duty required as defined by Code of Federal Regulations, Title 38, Section 3.12a; OR4) who has active military service certified under section 401, Public Law 85-202.Active military service must be certified by the United States Secretary of Defense as active military service and a discharge under honorable conditions must be issued by the Secretary. Veterans preference may be used by the surviving spouse of a deceased veteran and by the spouse of a disabled veteran who, because of the disability, is unable to qualify. You are ineligible to receive points if are were divorced from the veteran or were widowed and have remarried.Claims must be made on this application and documentation submitted within seven days of the application deadline for the position for which you are applying. The information you provide will be used to determine your eligibility for veteran's preference points. You are not required to supply this information, but we cannot award veteran's preference points without it. You must submit a copy of the "Member Copy 4" of your DD214 or other military documents to substantiate the service information requested.
