The Mental Health Professional is part of the Police Department, responsible for providing clinical insight with mental health. Job duties will include on-the scene mental health assessments, crisis work, diagnostic assessments, mental health and chemical health harm reduction planning, referral and resource work, coordination with other professionals/services, and follow-up behavioral health case management services.

Under general supervision and direction of the Chief of Police, the Mental Health Professional will accompany law enforcement on patrol, will be present after police-involved events to connect with individuals to service. A department vehicle will be provided.

**Please note that this is a grant funded position, and is budgeted to work up to 2 years at this time.**

Hiring Salary Range: $44.06 - $45.56 hourly
Salary Range of Position: $44.06 - $54.90 hourly

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Co-respond with police to assist clients who have a serious and persistent mental illnesses, homelessness and addiction.
  • Assist clients who suffer from chemical addiction and associated mental health issues with on-site mobile intervention by connecting them with treatment and recovery resources.
  • Create and implement training for police staff related to chemical dependency and related conditions/disorders.
  • Lead consultations with staff and service providers for case planning, specialized programs and agency procedures.
  • Support multidisciplinary collaborative approaches to issues of public health, public safety, and behavioral health at the state, regional, local, nonprofit and community levels.
  • Provide clinical supervision to case managers as needed
  • Explain legal processes to client families and community partners
  • Maintains frequent and ongoing client contact either in-person or over the phone.
  • Raise Community awareness and support Adult Mental Health issues, addiction and homelessness.
  • Regular and reliable attendance during scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Maintains positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, other jurisdictions and outside agencies, and the general public.
  • Performs essential position duties and responsibilities under the working conductions and physical demands described herein.
  • Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.
  • Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated.

Qualifications and Other Information

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to the following:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work or related field with licensure as a Mental Health Professional (MHP)
  • Three years or more experience assessing mental health and chemical health symptoms.
  • Strong skills in crisis assessment, person centered services, assertiveness, conflict management, and the ability to work independently.
  • Valid driver’s license


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working closely with law enforcement or corrections
  • Experience interacting with and providing services to individuals from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Additional licensure as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC)
  • Paid work experience conducting Crisis Assessments for an identified mental health crisis agency

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
