JOB SUMMARY

To operate light and medium power-driven equipment (Non-CDL), dump trucks, tractor mowers, etc.); to perform park and ground maintenance and repairs, including fertilization, artificial synthetic turf system maintenance, athletic field maintenance, sports field lining and repairs, sports complex safety operational management, irrigation systems, sports lighting, lightning protection, playground, and renovations/maintenance.

This is the semi-journey level in the Park Maintenance series. This position is distinguished from the Park Maintenance III in that the latter performs more complex and difficult equipment operation duties and utilizes complex equipment. Employees are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility. Employees may be required to serve as lead workers. Although not the primary responsibility of the position, employees may, on occasion, operate heavy equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (examples, not all-inclusive)

  • Applies chemicals by spraying City areas.
  • Prepares and maintains athletic fields and adjacent areas for use in recreational programming functions.
  • Assists in park renovations
  • Drag and line baseball/softball fields
  • Operates, repairs, and maintains non-traditional equipment, tools, vehicles, and City property maintenance.
  • Performs custodial duties such as cleaning windows and bathrooms, vacuuming and cleaning carpets, dusting, emptying trash, etc.
  • Loads and unloads equipment, supplies, tools, and materials.
  • Changes light bulbs, replaces tiles, and other light maintenance work.
  • Operate a variety of mowers and other landscape maintenance equipment.
  • Assist in planting, cultivating, and watering flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, annuals, and turf areas.
  • Assist in cutting, pruning, and trimming trees, shrubs, and hedges.
  • Rake leaves and remove fallen limbs and trash.
  • Edge and mulch bed areas.
  • Weed flowerbeds.
  • Mow and trim grass.
  • Edge curbs and walkways.
  • Perform routine maintenance on tractors, mowers, and power and hand tools.
  • Assist in the application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
  • Operate truck, tractor, and loaders in grounds preparation and maintenance work.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; investigate and respond to complaints from the public; resolve issues in the area of assignment.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Preferred: a valid Florida CDL Class B and a Class B trimers license. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for one year of the required experience or education. Must possess a valid State of Florida driver's license by the date of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Mixing and calibrating pesticides for application.
  • Plant material relating to landscaping areas.
  • A variety of trees by name.
  • Proper installation of plant material.
  • Stringing out and painting athletic fields and logos.
  • Methods and techniques of general landscape construction, maintenance, and repair related to the area of work assigned.
  • Equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Ability to:

  • Independently perform work orders and tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Perform minor maintenance work.
  • Operate tractor/attachment and flatbed or truck/trailers.
  • Drag, line, and maintain clay fields.
  • Weed-eat, edging, and mowing required.
  • Perform a variety of semiskilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned.
  • Operate a variety of vehicular, light equipment, and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Perform basic calculations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations of the department to which they are assigned.
  • Utilize standard hand tools, including hammers, wrenches, rakes, shovels, and screwdrivers.
  • Operate standard grounds maintenance machinery and equipment, including mowers, edgers, weed eaters, and blowers.
  • Utilize small power equipment, including chain saws.
  • Operate trucks, tractors, and loaders.

Supervision Received/Exercised:

Receives administrative direction from the Public Works Director or their Designee.

  • No supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

Tasks involve moderate to heavy physical effort, including heavy lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment or supplies of heavyweight, climbing stairs or ladders, and remaining in positions requiring prolonged standing, walking, or sitting. Tasks require physical agility, in which some combination of the following is typically required: bending, kneeling, climbing, crawling, and stooping. Tasks may involve extended periods working in outdoor conditions with exposure to disagreeable environmental conditions, e.g., solar radiation, heat, dust, dirt, humidity, fumes, gases, smoke, acute vibrations, electrical hazards, and confined or elevated workspaces. These tasks include making observations, communicating, reading and writing, using computers/tablets and operating equipment, making decisions, using judgment, estimating, calculating, and demonstrating intellectual capabilities and close collaboration with others.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Primarily operates in an outdoor environment with exposure to environmental risks, occasionally transitioning to indoor settings. This position is considered essential for disaster recovery efforts.
