JOB SUMMARY
To operate construction and maintenance equipment in support of a variety of horticulture vehicles and equipment activities, including mowing, loading, and related operations, and to perform other parks, horticulture, and street maintenance.
This is the entry-level class in the Street Maintenance series. This class is distinguished from the Street Maintenance II and III classes in that the latter classes perform more complex and difficult equipment operation duties and utilize heavier equipment. Employees operate light equipment, e.g., regular trucks, small dump trucks, front and rear deck mowing tractors, and walk-behind mowers. Although not the primary responsibility of the position, employees may, on occasion, operate medium-sized equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (examples, not all-inclusive)

- Operate light construction power-driven equipment, such as tractors, riding mowers, push-mowers, small dump trucks, irrigation systems, and a variety of other equipment in support of maintenance and construction operations.
- Participate in the repair and maintenance of City-owned properties such as parks, tree canopy, City streets, roads, alleyways, bus shelters, benches, solar lights, bus stop signs and drainage systems, and traffic control devices.
- Perform additional grounds maintenance, construction, and maintenance tasks such as mowing, clearing fence lines of obstructions, seeding, weeding, truck driving, and a variety of minor repair activities.
- Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; transport and deliver equipment to and from construction sites or bus stop locations; maintain equipment; inspect equipment prior to use; secure equipment following use.
- Maintain records and logs of all work performed and complete basic preventive maintenance on light equipment as required.
- Transport construction equipment and materials as needed.
- Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
- Perform routine repairs to plumbing, electrical and mechanical fixtures and equipment.
- Respond to public inquires in a courteous manner; investigate and respond to complaints from the public; resolve issues in the area of assignment.
- Perform routine cleaning of grounds and facilities.
- Performs other duties as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of one (1) year of experience involving the skilled operation of light and medium construction and maintenance equipment in parks, horticultural environments, street repair/maintenance, drainage, irrigation systems, or related fields. CPR certification, Forklift certification, Herbicide Applicator license, Defensive Driving course completion, First Aid certification, Trenching & Excavation certification, Confined Space Entry certification, NCDOL 10-hour Occupational Safety General Industry certification, Work Zone Safety certification, FEMA training completion, Flagger certification, Stars certification, Leadership training course completion and Small Engine Repair certification are preferred. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for one year of the required experience or education. Possession of or the ability to obtain a class B CDL. Must possess a valid State of Florida driver's license by the date of hire.

Supervision Received/Exercised:
- Receives administrative direction from the Public Works Director or their Designee.
- No supervisory responsibilities.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Tasks involve moderate to heavy physical effort, including heavy lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment or supplies of heavy weight, climbing stairs or ladders, and remaining in positions requiring prolonged standing, walking, or sitting. Tasks require physical agility, in which some combination of the following is typically required: bending, kneeling, climbing, crawling, and stooping. Tasks may involve extended periods working in outdoor conditions with exposure to disagreeable environmental conditions, e.g., solar radiation, heat, dust, dirt, humidity, fumes, gases, smoke, acute vibrations, electrical hazards, and confined or elevated workspaces. These tasks include making observations, communicating, reading and writing, using computers/tablets and operating equipment, making decisions, using judgment, estimating, calculating, and demonstrating intellectual capabilities and close collaboration with others.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Primarily operates in an outdoor environment with exposure to environmental risks, occasionally transitioning to indoor settings. This position is considered essential for disaster recovery efforts.
