Description
An employee in this class is responsible for safeguarding patrons at a City swimming pool by preventing injury or loss of life through drowning and for administering first aid or artificial respiration. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations governing the public use of swimming pools, and by the recognized practices of water safety. Supervision is received from a superior who makes work assignments and reviews work for orderliness and rule enforcement by visual inspection and conferences.
Days/Hours: Schedule may include weekends, evenings, holidays, and special events as needed.
Examples of Duties
- Ensure safety of patrons while utilizing swimming and fitness facilities.
- General maintenance and cleaning of pools and facilities.
- Preventative guarding for any or all three City swimming pools.
Typical Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent preferred. One year Lifeguard experience at a municipal facility is preferable. A current lifeguard certification is required at the time of hire.
Swim 400 yards or meters and perform CPR, rescue. Breathing, conscious and unconscious choking. Water skills test may be administered as a measure for qualifying.
Candidates must successfully complete all skills and requirements of the American Red Cross lifeguard course upon hire.
