Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties involved in receiving, evaluating, prioritizing, and relaying 911, emergency, and non-emergency calls for service; operates a variety of telecommunications equipment, including telephone / text, mapping, and computer-aided dispatch systems. The Public Safety Call Taker is the entry-level classification of the Dispatcher series. The Public Safety Call Taker is distinguished from Dispatcher which is required to dispatch units and coordinate the responses of emergency personnel. Candidates with prior experience, including heavy public contact as a telephone operator, receptionist, police cadet, or related position, are highly desirable.
Candidates must be available to work assigned and rotating shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays. The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills / abilities, experience, and characteristics :
Knowledge & Education
- Graduation from high school, or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Knowledge of basic dispatch codes, as well as standard abbreviations and industry terminology commonly used by emergency medical services and law enforcement agencies.
- Knowledge of telecommunications systems, which may include transmission, broadcasting, and switching systems, and computerized databases, including teletype operations and procedures.
- Candidates must have knowledge of rules, regulations, and procedures, including safety procedures, such as CPR and first aid. Policies and procedures may refer to department policies and procedures related to emergency communications and disaster and special response plans.

The incumbent may be sent to attend P.O.S.T.'s Public Safety Dispatcher Course.

This position is FLSA Non-Exempt, eligible for overtime compensation.

Selection Component Selection Component Description Selection Component Weight Video Interview Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications AND attach a current and valid typing certificate that meets the criteria listed above will be invited to participate in a video interview. Pass / Fail
Audio Exercise / Written Examination Audio Exercise -Candidates will listen to an audio recording of an example of the type of calls Public Safety Dispatchers are required to handle. A short break will be given after the audio recording and then the written examination will be administered.
Written Examination - Applicants must receive a minimum score of 70% in order to continue on in the recruitment process.
Pass / Fail Oral Interview Candidates will be placed on the eligibility list based on the scores received on each of the examination components. 100% Background Investigation The candidate selected for the position will undergo a thorough background investigation including a polygraph examination. Once a conditional job offer has been made, the candidate will undergo comprehensive medical and psychological examinations, including a urine drug screen, by City Medical Examiners. The Chief of Police will make the final hiring decision. Pass / Fail
The top scoring candidates from the virtual HireVue interview will be invited to participate in our one-day testing process is tentatively scheduled for Monday, October 28 , 2024 . The day will start with the audio exercise and written exam. Those who score a 70% or higher on the written exam will continue onto interviews. Candidates that pass the interview will be placed on an eligibility list and will be contacted by the department to start the background process as vacancies arise.

The Organization
The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government.
