Aquatics Coordinator
The mission of Coronado Recreation and Golf Services is to promote community, health, and safety while building a culture of excellence. Recreation and Golf Services offer a wide variety of programs and services for all ages and throughout the community. Our staff strives to provide excellent customer service while enhancing the health and fitness of all guests who use our facilities.
Under direction, the Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for supervising and coordinating assigned aquatic programs, activities, and operations at the City's public swimming facility; instructing various aquatics classes and programs; enforcing pool rules and regulations and ensuring the protection of patrons; coordinating assigned activities with other divisions, outside agencies, and the general public; and providing highly responsible and complex staff assistance to the Aquatics Supervisor. The Aquatics Coordinator is a full-time, non-exempt, probationary, and self-represented position.
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
- Coordinate the organization, staffing, and operational activities of assigned aquatics programs at the City’s public swimming facility.
- Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities; recommend and implement resulting policies and procedures.
- Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; identify resource needs; review with appropriate management staff; implement improvements.
- Direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for assigned aquatic services and activities; assign work activities and projects; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems.
- Direct the work of pool lifeguards and aquatics instructors; perform lifeguard duties and instruct swimming lessons as needed.
- Supervise pool operations including the conducting of regular water chemistry tests and monitoring chemical feed systems and pump operations.
- Plan, organize, and supervise various special aquatic events.
- Respond to emergency situations rapidly and efficiently; perform water rescues; administer first aid, rescue breathing, and CPR as required.
- Select, train, motivate, and evaluate aquatics personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures.
- Coordinate aquatics program activities with those of other divisions and outside agencies and organizations.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible lifeguarding, water safety, or swimming instruction experience.
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in lifeguard services, water safety, or a related field.
Licenses and Certificates:
(1) Possession of, a valid CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate.
(2) Possession of a valid first aid certificate.
(3) Possession of a valid Lifeguard Training certificate.
(4) Possession of a valid Water Safety Instructor authorization.
(5) Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid Certified Pool/Spa Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator certificate.

Candidate Selection Process:
Application Review:
A completed City of Coronado employment application and resume must be received by the Human Resources Division by 11:59 PM PST on January 30, 2025. Applications will be received on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience.
Examination Process:
Applications will be reviewed on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience. Applicants considered most qualified will be contacted and invited to participate in an examination process consisting of a swim/aquatic rescue/CPR skills test (100%). Candidates who pass the skills test will be invited to an oral interview.
Department Interview:Top candidates will be invited for a department interview with the Aquatics Supervisor and Director of Recreation & Golf Services.
Candidate Selection:
The selected candidate will be issued a conditional offer, subject to the successful completion of background check, and medical examinations.
Additional Information:
All candidates who successfully obtain a 70% or above in each phase of the exam process will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of at least six (6) months. The Retirement Benefit Formula for PEPRA CalPERS Members, hired after January 1, 2013, is 2% at 62. The current employee contribution rate is 7.50%.
As part of ensuring our employees maintain a work/life balance, employees earn 144 hours of Annual Leave per year for the first 5 years. After 5 years, the accrual rate increases.
The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance in an amount equal to a one-time annual salary or $50,000, whichever is greater, at no cost to the employee.
The City provides short- and long-term disability insurance equal to 66 2/3% of income. Employees that earn over the maximum benefit of $5,000/month available under the long-term disability plan, have the option to purchase enhanced long-term disability insurance.
The City provides up to $2,000 per fiscal year for reimbursement of directly related costs of tuition, school fees, books, and required materials for approved courses and professional development opportunities. Student Loan Repayment can be used under this benefit.
