The Department:
The mission of the Public Services and Engineering Department is to maintain the City’s physical infrastructure and provide the highest level of cost-effective maintenance for the City’s beaches, facilities, parks, sanitary sewer and storm drain systems, and rights of way, while protecting the public’s health and safety.”
 
The Department of Public Services and Engineering is responsible for maintaining the City’s physical infrastructure and maintenance for the City’s beaches, facilities, parks, sanitary sewer and storm drain systems, and rights of way, while protecting the public’s health and safety. The department also provides engineering management, including planning, design, construction, and repair of the City’s buildings, parks, streets, and utility systems in addition to management of a wide range of services and programs.

The Wastewater-Storm Water Division is responsible for the maintenance and operating control systems of 18 varying sized pump and lift stations, 10 nuisance flow diverter stations, 45 miles of sewer and 8 miles of storm collection systems.  Coronado maintains the systems with the inclusion of two combination hydro-jetter vehicles and CCTV vehicle & equipment.
The Electrician position is assigned to the Utilities Division - Wastewater and Storm Water and provides general support to the Facilities Division performing building electrical maintenance, coordination and oversight of projects.
 
The ideal candidate will possess strong customer service and interpersonal skills in order to work efficiently and effectively with all City Departments, employees and contractors. The successful candidate will have high ethical and professional standards, strong organizational and time management skills in addition to excellent verbal and written communication. They will possess journey level experience, to include electrical instrumentation control systems and the ability to effectively prioritize, work independently and consistently provide quality work. Possession of a General Electrician Certification issued by the State of California is strongly preferred at time of employment.

The Electrician position requires participation in rotational Standby/On-Call shifts which can involve working at nights, on the weekends and holidays during rain events. Candidates will need to have flexibility to perform on-call duties as assigned.

Experience: At least four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the installation, maintenance repair and operation of high voltage electrical and electronic systems, including two years at the journey level.

Required Licenses and Certificates:
  • Possess a Class A License within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Possession of a General Electrician Certification issued by the State of California or the ability to obtain the certification within eighteen (18) months of appointment.
  • Electrical Instrumentation Technologist Grade I Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) is required, or the ability to obtain the certificate within eighteen (18) months of appointment.
Preferred Licenses and Certificates:
  • CWEA Electrical Instrumentation Technologist Grade II.
  • CWEA Mechanical Technologist Grade I or above.

Examination Process:
Application Review Phase:
A completed City of Coronado employment application and resume must be received by the Human Resources Division. Applications will be reviewed on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience. Certificates must be attached to the application.

Examination Process:
Applicants considered most qualified after the application review process will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview (100%). Additionally, applicants may be requested to undertake one or more of the following exercises – written assessment, practical, or presentation – as part of the evaluation process.

Final Interview:
The top candidates will be invited to a department interview with the Wastewater/Storm Water Supervisor and Director of Public Services and Engineering.

Candidate Selected:
The final candidate will be issued a conditional offer, subject to the successful completion of background check and medical examination including a drug screen.

WHAT CORONADO HAS TO OFFER:
  • A rich benefits package contributes to the total compensation value. Benefits include a monthly cafeteria allotment of $2,168 voluntary retirement savings/deferred compensation, tuition reimbursement, group term life, short-term and long-term disability coverage, an employee assistance program, and more. 
  • The Retirement Benefit Formula for Classic CalPERS hired prior to January 1, 2013, is Members is 3% at 60. The current employee contribution rate is 9.5%.
  • The Retirement Benefit Formula for PEPRA CalPERS Members, hired after January 1, 2013, is 2% at 62. The current employee contribution rate is 7.50%.
  • As part of ensuring our employees maintain a work/life balance, employees earn 144 hours of Annual Leave per year for the first 5 years. After 5 years, the accrual rate increases.   
  • The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance in an amount equal to a one-time annual salary or $50,000, whichever is greater, at no cost to the employee. 
  • The City provides short- and long-term disability insurance equal to 66 2/3% of income. Employees that earn over the maximum benefit of $5,000/month available under the long-term disability plan, have the option to purchase enhanced long-term disability insurance. 
  • The City provides up to $2,000 per fiscal year for reimbursement of directly related costs of tuition, school fees, books, and required materials for approved courses and professional development opportunities. Student Loan Repayment can be used under this benefit. 
  • Longevity Pay; bonus at 10 years and every 5 years after.  
  • Lateral Vacation Service Credit, effective January 1, 2023, employees shall be given credit for prior verifiable public service employment for annual leave accrual rates. 
  • Access to community pool and gym.
