The City of Coronado is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Librarian I.

The Librarian I position is a temporary, part-time, non-benefited position (not to exceed 19 hours per week) available in the Library Services Department. 
The Library Services Department is seeking an ideal candidate with reference experience and prior experience leading the work of clerical and volunteer library staff.


The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:

1. Provide reference and readers' advisory assistance to Library patrons of all ages; perform both general and specialized tasks related to the circulation, acquisition or cataloging of Library materials; assist in the processing and maintenance of Library materials.

2. Provide assistance to Library patrons in locating various materials; explain use of automated catalog systems, indexes and databases; recommend materials to patrons using standard bibliographic sources; locate materials on the shelf.

3. Determine patrons' needs through the reference interview process; suggest resources from within the Library's collection or from other libraries; identify appropriate sources for obtaining books and other materials that the Library does not own.

4. Assist in the review and selection of books and other library items for the general collection.

5. Troubleshoot technical problems with computerized and mechanical equipment; provide personalized computer search services using various online services and indexes.

6. Promote Library services and resources through the use of exhibits, tours, clubs, outreach and the media; prepare informational handouts for public distribution including calendars and flyers.

7. Participate in the preparation and maintenance of displays; assist with seasonal and on-going programs and activities including summer reading programs, story times, and volunteer participation.

8. Lead, plan, train and review the work of clerical and volunteer Library staff; train assigned employees in their areas of work including technical and clerical library methods, procedures and techniques.

9. Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer, typewriter, telephone system, copy machine, facsimile machine and other related equipment.

10. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Some professional library experience is desirable.

Education/Training: Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in library science or a related field.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record.

Knowledge of:
Library services and functions.
Principles and procedures of library classification, cataloging and reference work.
Computerized cataloging, bibliographical and circulation systems and databases.
Books, bibliography, and literature.
Library audio-visual media and its role in library services.
Computerized search strategies.
Modern office equipment including computers.
Principles and practices of record keeping.
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Ability to:
Perform professional and technical library tasks including cataloging and classification of materials.
Perform research using reference materials.
Operate computerized cataloging, bibliographical, acquisition and circulation data systems.
Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and associated word processing applications.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Productivity: Incumbents must perform work in an efficient, effective and timely manner with minimal direction.

Mobility: Incumbents require sufficient mobility to work in a library setting, operating office equipment.

Vision: Vision sufficient to read small print, computer screens and other printed documents.

Environment: Library environment; extensive public contact.

Other Factors: Incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Incumbents may be required to travel outside City boundaries to attend meetings.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:
A completed City of Coronado employment application and copies of all licenses and/or certificates must be received in the Human Resources Division. Applicants will be screened for qualifications and those applicants considered best qualified will be invited to an oral interview.

All appointments are subject to a successful completion of a background check and pre-employment physical examination. The City of Coronado participates in E-Verify; all new employees are required to submit verification of legal right to work in the United States.
