What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic II position at City of Coronado, California?
The ideal candidate will possess strong customer service and interpersonal skills in order to work efficiently and effectively with all City Departments, employees, and service providers. This person should be self-motivated, take initiative, and work well as part of a team-oriented department. The ideal candidate will be able to perform skilled maintenance and repairs on a variety of light-duty, heavy-duty, and emergency services vehicles.
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
- Perform skilled mechanic duties involving troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing gasoline and diesel-powered automotive, heavy and light construction, and other power-driven equipment.
- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and adjust a variety of systems on light and heavy equipment and vehicles, including fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, computer control systems, fuel injection systems, antilock brake systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems, fuel management systems, transmissions, steering and suspension components, clutches engine sensors, and DOT Inspections.
- Inspect motorized and mechanical equipment; diagnose problems and determine extent of necessary repairs; perform routine preventive maintenance.
- Overhaul, repair and adjust engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators, distributors and pumps; fit and adjust bearings; install axles and wheels.
- Convert automobiles from standard production units to law enforcement vehicles; install decals and numbers on units; fabricate and install specialized equipment on units such as amplifiers, light bars, shotgun racks, cages and overhead pipe rack.
- Diagnose, maintain and repair electrical system components, ignition systems, alternators, high voltage power generators, starters and batteries.
- Diagnose and repair front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears and chain drives.
- Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
- Tune-up engines by replacing ignition parts, recondition and adjust carburetors, fuel injection systems, and propane fuel systems; repair and maintain emission control systems.
- Repair, adjust, and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, masters cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors, and hydraulic and air brakes.
- Weld, fabricate, and assemble parts and equipment for City automotive and heavy equipment; fabricate and modify tools as needed.
- Maintain and repair shop equipment; clean and maintain assigned work area; dispose of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
- Assist other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs as required.
- Maintains work, time, material, and equipment logs and records; enters and/or retrieves data from computerized asset management/workflow system.
- Operates and maintains hand, power, diagnostic, shop tools, and equipment.
- Compiles and maintains maintenance, operation, and repair manuals, schematics, and other information relative to the City’s vehicle, equipment, and facilities fleet.
- Provides training regarding the methods and techniques of vehicle and equipment pre-operation and safety checks, lubrication checks, start-up, operation, and shutdown procedures.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Possession of a valid Class B California Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsement and a safe driving record is required within six (6) months of appointment. Employees hired after September 30, 2022, shall be required to possess a Class A License or obtain the license within six (6) months of appointment.
- Two ASE Certifications related to vehicles/equipment active within the City fleet including Medium/Heavy Truck Technician are required within eighteen (18) months of appointment.
- California Fire Mechanic Level I certificate is required within eighteen (18) months of appointment.
Preferred Certifications:
- Possession of a California Fire Mechanic Level II certificate or above is highly desirable.
- Possession of or ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within twelve (12) months of appointment is highly desirable.

The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance in an amount equal to a one-time annual salary or $50,000, whichever is greater, at no cost to the employee.
The City provides short- and long-term disability insurance equal to 66 2/3% of income. Employees that earn over the maximum benefit of $5,000/month available under the long-term disability plan, have the option to purchase enhanced long-term disability insurance.
The City provides up to $2,000 per fiscal year for reimbursement of directly related costs of tuition, school fees, books, and required materials for approved courses and professional development opportunities. Student Loan Repayment can be used under this benefit.
