The Department
The Recreation and Golf Services Department consists of seven (7) divisions: Golf Services, Administration, Community Center & Club Room, Community Engagement & Events, Aquatics & Boathouse, John D. Spreckels Center, and Parks & Beaches. The Department strives to be trend-setters in community engagement, customer service, and program opportunities and each division has unique responsibilities to contribute.
City of Coronado employees are provided the following recreation benefits, subject to Administrative Procedure 218: employees and their spouses/children (when accompanying employee) are eligible to swim free of charge at the Municipal Pool during lap swim or Family Swim; employees are eligible to skate free of charge at the Coronado Skate Park; employees and retired employees are eligible to use the Fitness Center and participate in Open Gym time in the Coronado Community Center free of charge; employees and their spouses/children may participate in recreation activity or aquatics classes and programmed activities at resident rates; and employees are eligible to rent City of Coronado recreation/banquet facilities at resident rates and terms.
The Division
The City of Coronado Community Center & Club Room Division oversees all programs and rentals for the Coronado Community Center and Club Room at the Boathouse facilities. The Community Center has a full-size gymnasium, a dance room, a fitness center, 2 classrooms, a banquet hall with commercial kitchen, and a playhouse.
The main functions of the division include fitness and sports programming, operating the front desk, operating the rock wall, facilitating rentals, and ensuring the proper maintenance of the facility in coordination with Public Services & Engineering Department.
The Recreation Services Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of 1.75 full-time Recreation Coordinators as well as up to 40 temporary/seasonal part-time employees. The job objectives are: under general administrative direction, to direct, manage, supervise, and coordinate the activities and operations of the Community Center and Club Room Division within the Recreation & Golf Services Department including contracting with independent providers for programs, issue facility reservations, facilitate fitness programming for youth and adults, manage indoor youth and adult sports classes and leagues, inspect facilities for maintenance issues; to coordinate assigned activities with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies; and to provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Director of Recreation & Golf Services.
The Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate for the Recreation Services Supervisor position will be dynamic and highly motivated; experienced in management of multipurpose recreation or community center; skilled in navigating complex customer service issues; proven track record of providing exceptional fitness and/or sports programming; excellent communicator; intentional and assertive to hold staff to high expectations.

- At least five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation program administration, including two years of supervisory responsibility.
- Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation administration, business administration, public administration, gerontology, social services, or a related field.
- Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid first aid certificate.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid CPR certificate.
- Experience in sports and/or fitness programming.
- Familiarity with managing a multipurpose recreation facility.
Examination & Selection Process
- Application Review Phase – A completed City of Coronado employment application and documentation of required certifications must be received by the Human Resources Division by 11:59 PM PST on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Applications will be reviewed on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience.
- Oral Interview Panel – Applicants considered most qualified after the application review process will be invited to participate in an oral interview panel as early as the week of March 24, 2025.
- Department Interview – All candidates who obtain a 70% or higher on the oral interview panel will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of six months. The top 3 candidates in the oral interview panel will be invited to participate in a Department Interview with the Director as early as the week of April 7, 2025. All candidates invited to the department interview will be asked to provide authorization for the City to conduct reference checks. All applicants will be notified via email of their eligibility status.
- Conditional Offer of Employment – The candidate determined to be the best fit for the department will be offered a conditional offer of employment. All appointments are subject to successful completion of a background check and medical examination. All new employees are required to submit verification of legal right to work in the United States. - Final Offer of Employment and Start Date – After successful completion of the pre-employment screening process, the City will issue a final offer of employment noting the starting date. It is the intention of the Recreation & Golf Services Department to have the candidate start in the Recreation Services Supervisor position in the month of June 2025.

- The City provides up to $2,000 per fiscal year for reimbursement of directly related costs of tuition, school fees, books, and required materials for approved courses and professional development opportunities. Student Loan Repayment can be used under this benefit.

- Lateral Vacation Service Credit, effective January 1, 2023, employees shall be given credit for prior verifiable public service employment for annual leave accrual rates.
