Job Summary
The work involves responsibility for leading and participating with a small group of Laborers, Motor Equipment Operators and Seasonal Employees in safely performing a variety of routine highway maintenance tasks. A Working Foreperson serves as a “straw boss” and as such actively participates in work projects. Instructions are received regarding work to be done and how to perform work when new or unusual procedures are involved. Working Forepersons lead and participate in the work and notify supervisors of the work in progress and upon completion. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
- Leads and participates in the cleaning, maintenance, construction and repair of streets, highways, facilities and adjacent areas;
- Leads and participates in the paving of streets and highways;
- Leads and participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of concrete walks and street curbing;
- Leads and participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of sanitary and storm sewers and associated structures;
- Leads and participates in the maintenance, repair, fabrication and installation of traffic signs;
- Leads and participates in the maintenance, repair and installation of traffic signals;
- Leads and participates in snow removal and salting tasks;
- Leads and participates in tree removal and tree trimming;
- Leads and participates in brush and leaf removal; Leads and participates in the maintenance of tools and equipment;
- Operates various pieces of motor equipment in connection with the work; Performs various manual tasks;
- May maintain records of work performed.
Full Performance Knowledges, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:
- Working knowledge of practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions of street and highway maintenance;
- Good knowledge of local geography and streets;
- Ability to safely and effectively operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment;
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to participate in assigned projects and lay-out work for others;
- Ability to prepare simple activity records and reports;
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications: Either:
(a) Possession of a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of paid experience in public works, heavy equipment operation, or related activities, including at least two (2) years in masonry, construction trades, or similar skilled trade involving the use of heavy equipment, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity overseeing trade work and masonry projects; OR
(b) Possession of a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of paid experience in public works, heavy equipment operation, or construction related-activities, with at least four (4) years in a supervisory capacity overseeing trade work or masonry projects.
