What are the responsibilities and job description for the Code Enforcement Officer- Seasonal position at City of Cottage Grove?
Under direction of the Code Enforcement Officer, this seasonal position is responsible for monitoring and enforcement of property maintenance and zoning codes, policies and ordinances to ensure effective and appropriate enforcement throughout the City. This position reports directly to the Building Official but also receives work direction from the Code Enforcement Officer and Community Development Director.
This position will work 40 hours per week from April through October. This position will not receive any benefits.

- Address nuisance and property related code violations within all residential, commercial and industrial zoning areas.
- Clearly notify property owners of code violations and prepare an appropriate corrective action plan. Attentively follow up on compliance deadlines, issue citations and prepare all documentation in a manner consistent for possible court proceedings.
- Administer the City's Sign and Zoning regulations as required.
- Administer all property abatement procedures.
- Effectively communicate, both verbally and written, with all City staff, homeowners, business owners and contractors.
- Understand the City's minimum maintenance requirements within all zoning areas and monitor the community to promote and maintain the health, safety and wellbeing of all properties within the City.
- Perform all other necessary duties as apparent or assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Strong computer skills in word processing and template software used by the Code Compliance Division.
- Have the ability to provide clear and effective verbal and written communications.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
- Previous code enforcement experience with a governmental agency or two years of experience in municipal planning or zoning inspection, housing or building inspection, rehabilitation inspection, or environmental health inspection.
- Ability to prepare, organize and maintain inspection field data, files and records.
- Ability to communicate orally; ability to produce effective presentations and reports including research, synthesis of information, prepare text, graphs, charts and graphics. Ability to write clearly, concisely and legibly.
- Ability to deal with timeframes and deadlines.
- Ability to analyze situations and information, formulate alternatives and use sound judgment in drawing conclusions and making decisions. Ability to develop a course of action and maintain momentum to reach successful conclusions to assignments within a timely manner.
- Ability to handle threatening and stressful situations and effectively deal with the public.
- Ability to meet physical requirements to successfully complete field inspections.
- Ability to enforce the City code in a firm, tactful and impartial manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, city employees and the public.
