This is a skilled position of non-exempt classification responsible for the preventative and emergency maintenance of all city-owned vehicles and machinery.
City Mechanics provide their own tools and toolbox. The City provides a very limited number of specialty tools. Mechanics receive $1,655 annually for combined uniform and tool allowance.

- Perform preventative and emergency maintenance and repairs to light and heavy duty trucks, automobiles, construction equipment, agriculture equipment, turf and grounds equipment, snow and ice removal equipment, generators, Public Safety vehicles, and all other vehicles and equipment in all city divisions.
- Assist in maintaining adequate shop supplies and parts, maintain accurate records of all work performed and supplies used, and make recommendations for necessary purchases of equipment and supplies to improve the efficiency of the operation.
- Uses the computer to enter work orders, track supplies, parts and time.
- Responsible for determining when certain pieces of equipment throughout all city divisions are unsafe for use.
- Perform necessary welding and fabricating to repair and maintain all equipment.
- Respond to emergency call-outs after hours.
- Assist department personnel with snow removal utilizing commercial vehicles, pickup trucks and other equipment.
- Perform all other necessary duties as apparent or assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license.
- Possession of a commercial driver's license (CDL) or ability to obtain a CDL within one year of employment.
- Previous training and/or experience with agricultural, industrial, and heavy trucks.
- A.S.E. Certified for automobiles and heavy-duty trucks.
- Five years experience in mechanical work, of which three years shall be in heavy equipment repair and maintenance, or a two-year certification of completion from a technical school and three years experience.
- Experience with welding, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Possession of a MN Commercial Vehicle Certification.
- Knowledge of the practices and methods, tools and materials used in the maintenance of automotive, light and heavy-duty trucks, construction, agriculture equipment, snow and ice, turf and grounds, Public Safety vehicles, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical components of automotive, light and heavy-duty trucks, construction, agriculture equipment, snow and ice, turf and grounds, Public Safety vehicles, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment and repair work and large-scale shop operations.
- Ability to diagnose defects in automotive, light and heavy-duty trucks, construction, agriculture equipment, snow and ice, turf and grounds, Public Safety vehicles, and related equipment, and to repair such defects with skilled proficiency.
- Knowledge and ability to fabricate and weld.
- Knowledge of electronic/electrical systems and radio repairs.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems.
- Ability to communicate and coordinate with co-workers on special work projects.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to use computer for inputting information into maintenance program (Pubworks) and researching a variety of different topics.
- Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in this field. Ability to perform manual labor associated with major mechanical repair work.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, City employees and the public.
