Role Overview

The Driver will operate trucks under certification of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in the Public Works Department. You will be responsible for transporting materials, tools, and equipment to and from the city garage/work sites, as well as performing general construction, maintenance, and sanitation duties as needed. This position is vital to supporting the overall operations of the department by ensuring that work sites are properly equipped and that essential services are carried out efficiently.

This is a hands-on role, requiring both driving and physical labor, along with the ability to manage tasks independently and professionally while maintaining communication with your supervisor. A successful Driver will be organized, safety-conscious, and committed to the city’s values of collaboration and excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Vehicle Maintenance & Inspections: Perform daily preventative maintenance duties on vehicles, tools, and equipment. Detect malfunctions and make minor repairs or recommend major repairs as needed.
• Transporting Materials: Inspect load prior to departure, ensure correct and complete load, and drive truck to destination. Manually load and unload trucks as necessary.
• Safe Operation: Operate trucks and small motorized equipment safely and efficiently.
• Communication & Coordination: Maintain telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive delivery instructions and provide updates.
• Recordkeeping: Maintain truck log according to state and federal regulations.
• Cleanliness & Maintenance: Ensure cleanliness and proper storage of vehicles, tools, and equipment after use.
• General Maintenance & Sanitation: Assist in installing, constructing, repairing, and maintaining city buildings, streets, sidewalks, sewers, culverts, catch basins, drainage ditches, and more. Perform tasks such as mowing grass, collecting leaves, cutting weeds, and trimming trees and limbs.
• Safety: Maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
• High school diploma or GED.
• Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• One to three months related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in construction or general maintenance work.

• Ability to maintain discretion regarding business-related files, reports, and conversations within the provisions of open records law and other applicable state and federal statutes and regulations.
• Organizational and time management skills necessary to meet deadlines.
• Attention to detail and the ability to work accurately.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and prepare accurate, concise records and reports.

Language, Math, and Reasoning Skills

Language Skills:
• Ability to explain relevant information effectively to various audiences.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbally.
• Must be proficient in workplace English and spelling.

Mathematical Skills:
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

• Must possess a valid state driver’s license or obtain one prior to employment.
• Must have Class A CDL certification.

Physical Demands

This job requires frequent physical activity, including sitting, standing, walking, and using hands for handling tools and controls. Employees must be able to regularly lift up to 25 pounds, frequently lift up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, and color vision, along with depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Employees may work near moving mechanical parts, in high places, or in outdoor weather conditions. Exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, and vibration may occur. The noise level in the work environment is typically loud, especially during construction activities.
