Role Overview
The Fire Cadet position is specifically for Covington residents between the ages of 18 and 21 who are looking to gain hands-on experience in fire service, emergency medical services (EMS), and rescue operations. This opportunity is designed for individuals who want to pursue a career in public safety, while benefiting from structured training, mentorship, and career development. The Cadet will attend required training programs, including obtaining certifications in EMT, Paramedic, and fire recruit programs. After successful completion of training, will work under general supervision to respond to fire alarms, medical calls, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergencies.
This is a resident-only program, and applicants must meet the age requirement and reside within the City of Covington to be considered for the position.
Key Responsibilities
- Emergency Response & Firefighting: Respond to a wide range of emergency alarms including fires, medical emergencies, traffic accidents, natural gas leaks, hazardous materials incidents, and rescues. Work alongside a mentor to gain real-world experience in firefighting and emergency response techniques.
- Fire Suppression & Rescue Operations: Fight fires following departmental protocols; connect and lay hose lines, set ladders, operate fire streams, and use hand and power tools to ventilate and enter burning structures. Participate in search and rescue operations to remove hazards and protect property. Note: Cadets may only enter an Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) environment after graduating from the fire recruit program and with the approval of their Company Officer.
- Emergency Medical Services: Provide emergency medical services at the basic life support level under the supervision of certified EMTs and paramedics. Assist with patient assessments, CPR, trauma care, and patient preparation for paramedics. Note: Cadets are not the primary EMS provider but will gain valuable experience in the field.
- Training & Drills: Participate in ongoing training, drills, and courses covering a wide range of fire service topics such as fire techniques, medical aid, hazardous materials, equipment maintenance, and fire prevention.
- Support and Maintenance: Assist with the maintenance and readiness of fire apparatus, equipment, and department facilities. Participate in the inspection and upkeep of fire vehicles, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Community Outreach: Assist with community programs, including fire education, public safety awareness, and outreach activities.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be a resident of the City of Covington.
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 21 at the time of application.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- A valid drivers license.
- Ability to successfully complete and pass required EMT, paramedic, and fire recruit training programs.
- Ability to work under supervision, follow instructions, and demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow in the fire service.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest in pursuing a career in fire service, emergency medical services, or related fields.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and manage high-stress situations effectively.

- Must have sufficient vision and hearing ability to observe emergency scenes, operate vehicles, and communicate with others both in person and via radio.
