Description
General Purpose
Operates various equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of city water and wastewater infrastructure, streets, parks, and storm drain infrastructure.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operates a variety of equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and construction of water, wastewater, parks, and street department operations
Locates water and wastewater lines prior to excavation
Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, low water pressure, water quality issues, and / or no water
Responds to complaints regarding wastewater backups, stoppages, and / or overflows
Makes contact with residents and business owners in areas where water / wastewater services may be interrupted, provides an explanation and estimated time frame when services may be restored
Maintains equipment and tools in proper working order, performing routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment
Reports equipment and tool defects to supervisor
Performs required labor, as part of a crew, involved in the construction and maintenance of streets, wastewater collection lines, water distribution lines, water meters, manholes, valves, and fire hydrants
Performs checks on water booster stations, elevated water storage, sewer lift stations, and other related pumps as directed
Operates a variety of power and hand tools
Mows grass, trims hedges, and cuts weeds as directed
Picks up trash and litter as directed
Repairs and installs street signage
Removes, replaces, and reads water meters as directed
Typical Qualifications
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
(A)Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
(B)Any equivalent combination of education and experience
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A)Basic knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in the maintenance, construction, operation and repair of Public Works infrastructure
(B)Three to five years experience in the operation of the listed tools and equipment
(C)Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
