General Purpose
Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work and operates various equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of city water and wastewater infrastructure, streets, parks, and storm drain infrastructure
Supervision Received
Works under the close supervision of a Crew leader, Field Supervisor, Assistant Public Works Director, and / or Public Works Director
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assists in locating water and wastewater lines prior to excavation
Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, low water pressure, water quality issues, and / or no water
Responds to complaints regarding wastewater backups. stoppages, and / or overflows
Makes contact with residents and business owners in area where water / wastewater services may be interrupted and provides an explanation as well as an estimated time frame when services may be restored
Assists with maintaining equipment and tools in proper working order, performing routine cleaning and maintenance as directed
Reports equipment and tool defects to supervisor
Performs required labor involved in the construction and maintenance of water and wastewater lines as part of a crew, to include street maintenance, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, service, meter and pipe repairs.
Reads water meters as needed.
Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water and sewer mains.
Installs fire hydrants and other appendages.
Services water supply, sewer lift stations, and other related pumps.
Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the water, sewer, and street department.
Mows grass, trims hedges, and cuts weeds as needed.
Picks up trash and litter as needed.
May assist with repairs and installation of street signage as needed.
Removes and replaces water meters.
Peripheral Duties
Serves as a member of various employee committees as needed.
Responds to emergency after hour call outs
Required to be on stand-by
Other duties as assigned
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
(A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
(B)Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
(B) Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
(C) Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the general public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Special Requirements
Valid Oklahoma State Driver's License, or the ability to obtain, prior to date of hire.
Level D Water and Wastewater State Certification, or the ability to obtain as required.
Tools and Equipment Used
Maintenance vehicle and equipment, pumps, saws, compressor, generators, common hand tools and power tools, shovel, two-way radio, telephone, shovel, and wrenches.
