Crescent City is hiring part-time lifeguards!
A lifeguard's primary responsibility is to ensure patrons' safety at all times and to provide exceptional customer service to our community. The Lifeguard classification is also responsible for assisting and performing routine maintenance and cleaning at Fred Endert Municipal Pool.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES :
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and / or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Prevent accidents and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations;
- Respond quickly to all emergency situations in the water and out per facility's staff manual;
- Administer any emergency first-aid needed by the victim of an accident;
- Communicate, per staff manual, with other lifeguards and facility staff the need for additional assistance and / or equipment;
- Observe and enforce all rules and regulations of the facility in order to aid in the prevention of accidents and incidents;
- Educate the patrons and inform them of the purpose of, and need for, rules and regulations;
- Assist parents or family members in locating a missing child or relative;
- Complete all required records and reports on schedule and to submit them to the Designated Head Lifeguard;
- Perform cashier duties when needed;
- Perform various pool maintenance and custodial tasks.
- Lifeguards are expected to have flexibility within their work schedules. This includes the following :
The ability to help with 1-2 special events. This may include working special events on holidays.

SUPERVISION : This position is supervised by the Aquatics Supervisor, Relief Supervisor / Lesson Coordinator. Recreation Director and may be supervised by a Designated Head Lifeguard. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the skills, knowledge and abilities would be :

Possession of American Red Cross certifications, or equivalent certifications which meet Emergency Medical Systems Authority standards, in :
Physical, Mental, Environmental and Communication Demands :
Essential duties require the following physical, mental, environmental, and communication demands.
Physical : Ability to swim 500 yards in 12 minutes or less; ability to swim 50 yards in 45 seconds or less; requires frequent swimming, sitting, standing, walking; sufficient strength to rescue students / swimmers in distress.
Mental : Needs good judgment, tact, a positive attitude, and the ability to react quickly and appropriately in an emergency situation.
Environmental : Duties are performed in an enclosed swimming pool facility, with exposure to water and damp, wet conditions, and use of pool chemicals.
Communication :
Vision – Sufficient vision, including peripheral vision and depth perception, to observe swimmers and patrons in the water and on the pool deck and to monitor for unsafe situations.
Hearing – Sufficient clarity of hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to maintain two-way communications with swimmers and patrons in the water and on the pool deck, and to monitor for unsafe situations; to communicate in person and by telephone.
Speech – Sufficient clarity of speech or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to communicate effectively with patrons, other lifeguards and staff.
Writing – Sufficient to prepare required records and reports.
Reading – Sufficient to understand and interpret facility staff manual and policies and programs in order to carry out duties per those policies.
