The Intern will perform a wide variety of clerical duties in support of the operations and services of the Administrative Services Department:
- Research and review various budget and financial analysis, estimates and forecasts in support of the annual budget including revenue, operating and capital expenditures, and fund balance
- Assist the Finance Division in the development of a new interactive online budget format utilizing OpenGov software
- Assist the budget team with their implementation action plan for budget format changes
- Assist staff prepare for City’s Audit Committee or the Audit Committee Budget Subcommittee meetings
- Assist in the planning of and participate in community outreach meetings
- Assist the budget team in testing and finalizing budget procedures and standard language
- Assist with data cleanup processes for vendors and general ledger accounts
- Develop an understanding of public sector expenditures, revenues, accounting principles, and guidelines
- Check documents for the validity and accuracy of information, researching and clarifying payment requests; perform mathematical calculations; record, file, and distribute related documents; and report discrepancies
- Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
- Must be a college-level student enrolled in an Accounting, Business, or Finance Certificate or Degree program from an accredited college or university.
Knowledge:
- General clerical and accounting procedures
- Methods, policies, and procedures involved in accounting
- Computerized financial systems, spreadsheet and word processing software
- Customer service principles and techniques
- Skill in analyzing and interpreting financial documents and preparing finances and budget.
- Organizing, researching and coordinating.
- Problem-solving capabilities, including the propensity to identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations.
- Interpret data and other information, make decisions and recommendations in conformance with laws, regulations and policies, and present findings in a clear and concise manner.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Manage multiple priorities simultaneously and effectively prioritize assignments.
