The City of Cypress is seeking an experienced and highly-motivated Maintenance Supervisor to plan, assign, coordinate and supervise the work of City and contract personnel engaged in the maintenance of parks, athletic fields, parkways, trees and irrigation systems. The position reports directly to the Maintenance Superintendent. Although the primary area of responsibility is Landscape, the incumbent may assist in the oversight of other areas of Maintenance.
The Maintenance Supervisor classification is exempt and is a member of the Mid-Management group.
- Plan, organize and review work of assigned maintenance personnel and make recommendations as appropriate.
- Estimate time, materials and labor required for projects.
- Communicate with assigned personnel, contractors and other City departments to coordinate activities or exchange information.
- Investigate citizen complaints/requests and interact with the public to resolve conflicts.
- Inspect work projects while in progress and upon completion.
- Instruct assigned personnel in standard measures on the proper and safe use of machinery, equipment, hand tools, personal protective equipment, and the proper handling and storage of hazardous materials to ensure adherence and compliance with safety rules and regulations.
- Provide instruction and/or assistance with work involving more difficult and skilled tasks related to landscape maintenance.
- Prepare budget estimates and monitor budget expenditures.
- Train, counsel and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Tools, equipment, methods, materials and work practices of landscape maintenance
- Propagating, planting, cultivating, pruning and care of groundcover, shrubs, trees and lawns.
- Irrigation and water management best practices.
- Plant diseases, weeds, pests and the means of eradication and control.
- Operation and repair of grounds maintenance tools and power-driven equipment.
- Safety procedures, rules and regulations relating to public works assignments.
- Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.

- Budget preparation and control.
- Plan, organize, schedule and supervise the work of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance employees.
- Establish professional working relationships with contractors in the performance of landscape maintenance activities.
- Calculate basic estimates of materials and labor requirements for a job/project.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Exercise good judgment.
- Understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
- Train and counsel maintenance personnel on safety rules, regulations and productivity standards.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, using tact and sound judgment in dealing with employees, the public, and contractors.
- Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those encountered in the performance of duties.
- Four years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape maintenance, including two years of lead or supervisory experience; and
- A high school diploma or G.E.D.
- An Associate's degree, experience in contract management and horticulture, and an ISA Certified Arborist credential are highly desirable.
Due to the performance of field duties, an incumbent may be required to drive a City vehicle in the course of business. If so, an incumbent is required to possess, provide, and maintain a valid California driver license and must maintain an acceptable driving record during the course of employment.
Salary : $81,036 - $105,372
