Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator operates and drives heavy construction equipment for construction and maintenance of City facilities and utilities. Maintains roads, disposes of sludge waste, hauls dirt, maintains sewer systems, removes large

Essential Functions
1 Operates, drives, and manipulates heavy equipment such as trash compactors at landfills, track machines including crawler dozers, crawler loaders, and track hoes; safely operates maintainers, scrapers, dirt compactors, trailer tipping machines, cranes, and draglines.
2 Operates and maintains equipment by adjusting level and angle of grader blades, change-outs of buckets, and other parts of equipment.
3 Plans, determines, and communicates daily work and routes of 2 to 4 member crews in absence of the crew leader; provides direction and leadership when needed to ensure effective and safe operations.
4 Trains crew, lower level drivers and operators in maintaining and inspecting equipment to prolong usefulness and ensure adherence to all safety protocols and practices.
5 Completes work orders, job tickets, and other administrative forms; ensures accuracy and quality of work completion.
6 Drives truck and trailer rig to transport earth moving or other medium to large sized automotive equipment to job site.
7 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
1 Knowledge of heavy equipment operation and capabilities.
2 Knowledge of safety procedures.
3 Must possess a high degree of motor skills including eye-hand-foot coordination.
4 Ability to control speed and direction of motorized equipment in confined spaces, uneven terrain, and around utilities such as electric, gas, and water and communication lines.
5 Ability to operate multiple types of heavy equipment, including large track and rubber-tired equipment, cranes, draglines, maintainers.
6 Ability to acquire certification to operate large cranes.
7 Ability to plan work and make assignments to crewmembers when assigned to supervisory duties.
8 Ability to instruct and train subordinates and lower-level operators in heavy equipment operation.
9 Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and the general public.
10 Ability to identify hazardous materials when assigned to landfill operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE:
- Four (4) years of experience operating variety of light to medium equipment (e.g., backhoe, roto boom, front-end loaders, etc.) used in excavation, construction, utility, landfill and/or street sweeping operations.
LICENSES:
- Valid Texas class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Commercial Driver’s License with good driving record (class type depends on department).
- Applicants with a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), issued by a state other than Texas, must obtain a Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within ninety (90) days
Salary Range
$50,721.47 - $57,628.36
