Job Summary

The Forestry Manager oversees the Forestry Crews and related operations responsible for the maintenance, care, evaluation, and assessment of tree health and

Essential Functions
1 Manages activities of staff and daily operations of the Forestry department and related activities; delegates authority and responsibility for assigned tasks to subordinates; identifies needed areas of change or development and institutes changes to improve operations; plans, implements, coordinates, monitors compliance, and evaluates policies and procedures; reviews and oversees work schedules of others all subordinate levels.

3 Creates and verifies service requests; confirms schedules and assigns work to crews and other forestry personnel; approves tree planting requests and makes professional recommendations for species and planting locations; inventories and tracks street trees and various planting locations.
4 Coordinates and facilitates interdepartmental programs and related projects; drafts, writes, and monitors city wide specifications, manuals, and standard operating procedures for forestry care and maintenance; implements and oversees the Trinity Forest Management Plan, vegetation management, and restoration projects.
5 Monitoring and ensures the appropriate permitting for forestry related activities; enforces regulations for illegal dumping and coordinates with law enforcement and other agencies to handle illegal or non-compliant situations.
6 Monitors, manages, and oversees contract compliance for vendors and other personnel working forestry and horticultural projects within the City; oversees forestry service contracts, manages tree removal permits, and reviews building permits to ensure compliance with tree preservation requirements as specified by City Code.
7 Represents the program area at meetings, hearings, trials, conferences, and seminars or on boards, panels, and
committees; testifies at hearings, trials, and legislative meetings as appropriate.

Knowledge and Skills
1 Knowledge of Forest Practice Guidelines and Best Management Practices.
2 Project management and administration pertaining to tree care and maintenance.
3 Knowledge of arboriculture; tree growth and culture requirements.
4 Tree risk assessment; construction methods and techniques that impact the health and safety of trees.
5 Public Speaking, Emergency Operations procedures, and storm damage clean-up.
6 Operational understanding of services and activities needed to maintain and grow a healthy urban forest.
7 Interpreting tree surveys, site, landscape, irrigation and grading plans.
8 Principles of municipal budget preparation and control.
9 Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations relevant to the operational unit or functional program.
10 Establishing and maintaining strong relationships.
11 Supervision, training, and performance evaluations.
12 Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Forestry, Horticulture, Fire Ecology or Environmental Science field.
EXPERIENCE:
- Four (4) years of experience in the planning and management of urban forestry which involved two (2) or more of the following:
- Tree Risk
- Urban Canopy
- Heat Island
- Invasive species
- Reforestation and forest restoration projects and/or
- Safety/Forestry Operations
AND
- Two (2) years of supervisory/program management responsibilities
EQUIVALENCIES:
- High school diploma or GED plus eight (8) years of the required experience including two (2) years of the stated supervisory/management responsibilities will meet the education and experience requirements.
- Associate degree in any field plus six (6) years of the required experience including two (2) years of the stated supervisory/management responsibilities will meet the education and experience requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a non-specified field plus six (6) years of the required experience including two (2) years of the stated supervisory/management responsibilities will meet the education and experience requirements.
LICENSES:
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record
- International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Arborist Certification
- International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) or the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Tree Risk Assessment Municipal Specialist (must acquire within first 6-months)
Salary Range
$73,584.79 - $91,980.98
The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
