The Solid Waste Safety Specialist promotes the Department of Sanitation’s safety culture through routine safety inspections and consultations with field staff, supervisors, and managers. The Solid Waste Safety Specialist is responsible to conduct and/or coordinate safety training for job skills associated with the areas of responsibility.
Essential Functions
1 Ensures the Department of Sanitation’s team members are working and behaving in the safest way possible.
2 Promotes positive safety culture through routine safety inspections and consultations with field staff, supervisors, and managers.
3 Develops, reviews, and administers the department’s safety programs in coordination with appropriate management staff, including developing and implementing departmental safety policies and procedures.
4 Develops safety curriculum for classroom-based and on-site field training in coordination with the Sanitation’s training and development manager.
5 Conducts safety training and trains managers and supervisors to conduct safety training for their teams in coordination with Sanitation’s training and development manager
6 Creates, administers, coordinates, and assists management staff in conducting safety audits.
7 Drives to field sites to observe work practices and ensure proper procedures are followed.
8 Inspects work areas to ensure working conditions are consistent with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and other safety regulations and policies promulgated by municipal and State regulatory bodies.
9 Makes recommendations to correct observed and reported safety violations and to implement safe work practices; Develops, reviews and comments on safety policies, programs, and procedures.
10 Investigates incidents to determine root causes and to develop methods and procedures to prevent future occurrences.
11 Collaborates with the Office of Risk Management’s safety and incident review teams.
12 Develops inspection checklists and work with supervisors/crew leaders, as appropriate, to conduct ongoing site inspections and track corrective measures to closure.
13 Assists with gathering incident investigation data and work with management to identify possible better system (equipment, work practices, etc.) designs to improve performance.
14 Ensures Sanitation safety programs align with City-wide Safety Program.
15 Facilitates/Instructs Basic Life Support (CPR/AED) training to department employees.
16 Leads continuous improvement activities and programs, leveraging processes, tools, and best practices.
Knowledge and Skills
1 Knowledge of safety-related internal policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
2 Knowledge of MS Office products, primarily Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
3 Knowledge of project management principles
4 Skilled in administering a training program.
5 Skilled in the administration of a safety program.
6 Skilled in developing and facilitating presentations.
7 Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
8 Ability to manage time and multiple priorities to completion.
9 Ability to demonstrate strong organizational skills.
10 Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and customers.
11 Ability to stay current with the standards that relate to solid waste industries.
12 Ability to lead a safety based cultural change across an organization.
13 Proficiency in communicating effectively with all levels of the organization.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in organizational development, public health and safety, environmental health, science of occupational health and safety, or other related field.
EXPERIENCE:
- Three (3) years of experience working in safety administration or in development of safety programs.
LICENSES:
- Valid Texas State Driver’s License.
Salary Range
$29.12 - $35.35
The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
