Engineer I is a licensed engineer conducting planning, design, research, and other activities involving quantitative and qualitative analysis and conventional engineering problem-solving to develop and maintain the public infrastructure of the City of Dallas.
The Engineer I provides general project management and engineering expertise in the design, construction, implementation, and completion of all engineering related projects for the City of Dallas.
Essential Functions
Education
Bachelor of Science in engineering or higher in engineering from program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (EAC/ABET).
Licenses and Certifications
Professional Engineering License from the State of Texas. Professional Engineers with license/registration from other states must obtain the Texas license within six (6) months after appointment.
Other Requirements
Some positions require a valid driver’s license with good driving record.
Some positions may be subject to field-work and inclement weather conditions.

Job Description
Engineer I is a licensed engineer conducting planning, design, research, and other activities involving quantitative and qualitative analysis and conventional engineering problem-solving to develop and maintain the public infrastructure of the City of Dallas.
The Engineer I provides general project management and engineering expertise in the design, construction, implementation, and completion of all engineering related projects for the City of Dallas.
Essential Functions
- Provides project management over design and construction contracts for paving, streetscape, alley, aviation, facilities, drainage, flood control, bridge, sidewalk, erosion control, water and wastewater utilities, and any other infrastructure improvement projects.
- Coordinates all phases of the engineering design and construction of capital improvement projects; participates in the development of budget and determining funding; engages, interacts, and collaborates with other departments within the City; communicates and provides responses to citizens, council members, developers, and other City departments regarding project status.
- Develops, designs, and reviews engineering plans for all City of Dallas infrastructure to ensure that the proposed infrastructure improvements are of good design quality and that the projects are in compliance with City, State and Federal standards.
- Reviews and approves engineering design invoices, engineering design submittals, contractor progress payments, and other construction documents.
- Prepares agenda packages, administrative action packages, and change order packages for engineering design contracts, engineering supplemental agreements, construction contracts, and construction change orders.
- Collaborates, engages, and works with consultants, inspectors, contractors, engineers, representatives from other agencies within the City and outside, to successfully complete the design and construction of all infrastructure projects; performs occasional site visits to verify progress, responds to engineering concerns, and inspects project specifications; ensures budget adherence for engineering and construction projects.
- Performs other work as needed or required.
Education

- Advanced knowledge of project management and implementation practices and methods.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a variety of audiences.
- Advanced knowledge of civil engineering principles including safety, legal, licensing, credentialing, and innovation.
- Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships at all levels.
- Knowledge of contract management.
- Skilled in managing and directing engineering projects.
