Job Description
The Senior Mechanic provides senior level mechanical experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of stationary plant equipment, vehicle, and heavy automotive equipment.
Essential Functions
- Performs skilled mechanical maintenance, inspections, and repairs to the fuel, ignition, electrical, braking, and other systems in automotive equipment and power tools to ensure safe and operational equipment; may also perform mechanical maintenance for facilities, plants, and other equipment.
- Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and determines maintenance and repair needs across the City and its facilities; inspects and executes repairs, replacements, fabrications, modifications, and installations of various types of equipment, including plant equipment such as pumps, valves, chemical handling equipment, and all other related equipment in a timely manner to allow continuous operation of mechanical and plant facilities when equipment malfunctions occur.
- Performs state mandated inspections to ensures appropriate work is completed; research parts and equipment to determine the necessary course of action for repair and maintenance work; inspects equipment, automotive, and facility work.
- Assists in emergency towing situations and various accident occurrences; tows vehicles and equipment for repair and maintenance.
- Completes job tickets, work orders and keeps records such as work performed, amount of time required, repairs, parts, and preventive maintenance completed and other paperwork to document work and conditions of equipment; drives a wrecker to work sites or field locations to repair or retrieve city vehicles or equipment.
- Communicates, engages, and collaborates with a variety of employees, divisions, other city departments, and parts vendors to coordinate the repair of equipment and obtain materials.
- Trains and educates other mechanics on procedures and methods for repairs; ensures all work is done accurately and effectively with strong attention to detail; demonstrates proper work methods and safety procedures and assists with complex repairs.
- Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
- Performs state mandated inspections to ensures appropriate work is completed.
- Knowledge of mechanical principles, methods, procedures, and tool use.
- Knowledge of hand, pneumatic, and electric tools used in automotive repair.
- Ability to diagnose and plan the repair of a wide variety of automotive and diesel mechanical problems.
- Knowledge of state, local, and engineering specifics and regulations.
- Ability to read and understand automotive and mechanical repair manuals used in the repair of automotive machinery.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
- Ability to lead and train other mechanics
- Ability to complete apprenticeship training for the maintenance and repair of equipment.
- Establishing and maintaining strong and effective relationships
Minimum Qualifications
- Four (4) years' experience in automotive or truck repair.
Must Have
- Texas Driver's License with a good driving record
- Texas Vehicle Inspectors License
- A or B Commercial Driver's License
- Applicants with a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), issued by a state other than Texas, must obtain a Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within probationary period.
- EPA Section 609 (recovery of automotive refrigerants)
- Automotive Steering and Suspension Coursework or ASE exam A-4
- Automotive Brakes Coursework or ASE exam A-5
- Automotive Engine Repair Coursework or ASE exam A-1
- Automotive/Diesel Electrical Systems Coursework or ASE exam A-6 or T-6
- Automotive A/C Service and Repair Coursework or ASE exam A-7
- Automotive Engine Performance Coursework or ASE exam A-8
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Associate's degree in Automotive Technology plus two (2) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
- Must supply own set of mechanic's hand tools.
