Job Description
The Therapeutic Recreation Assistant assists in the implementation of specific programs for persons with mental and physically disabling conditions by conducting fitness, art,
drama, or adapted aquatic classes to meet the diverse and special needs of this population.
Essential Functions
1 Assists with physical fitness programs for adults and youth by conducting physical assessments and
determining weight lifting capabilities to help improve gross motor movements
2 Coordinates and leads youth and adult arts and drama programs to provide quality leisure activities for both
age groups.
3 Assists with organizing and conducting special events for youth and adults to ensure a variety of programs are
provided to all patrons of Bachman Therapeutic Center facility.
4 Conducts adapted aquatic classes for persons with disabling conditions by assessing each participant's
capabilities and applying special techniques and safety measures to help exercise and maintain their muscle
condition.
5 Provides information to participants, and the public regarding the various functions of the therapeutic center
including the variety of programs and classes offered for the benefit of the community; offers excellent customer service and direction.
6 Cleans and maintains program area of responsibility to ensure safety for patrons and staff.
7 Performs any and all other tasks as needed or assigned.
Knowledge And Skills
1 Basic knowledge of impaired populations and functioning characteristics.
2 Basic knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles and techniques.
3 Knowledge of first aid principles and practices and lifeguarding certifications if working with aquatics classes.
4 Ability to enforce recreation, program, and sporting regulations.
5 Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
6 Knowledge of strong customer service principles and practices.
7 Communicating effectively orally and in writing.
Experience
1 year working in recreation activities and programs preferred. Experience working with disabilities.
Licenses and Certifications
CPR/First Aid
Education
High School Diploma, GED
Salary Range
$21.04 - $22.67
