Job Description
The Water Meter Technician I performs entry level work in the testing, maintenance, and repair of water meters for the Dallas Water Utility. Assists in ensuring meters fully functional and accurately metering and makes repairs, exchanges, or performs maintenance activities.
Essential Functions
1 Evaluates and checks water meters across the city to ensure accurate metering for Dallas Water Utility Customers.
2 Identifies, determines, and addresses issues with meters; performs mechanical maintenance, repair, or adjustment to water meters.
3 Exchanges and adjusts problematic meters, accurately reports on issues and fixes, and tests meter to ensure accuracy; works and trains with senior level technicians to deliver excellent service.
4 Drives City vehicle to assigned areas for meter evaluation and checking; assists technicians with challenging issues or concerns with equipment; maintains safe driving and operating record.
5 Completes various paperwork regarding meter activities and technical work; ensures customer issues are addressed and meters fixed to be fully operational.
6 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Knowledge And Skills
1 Knowledge of meter reading and repair
2 Knowledge of water utility operations and activities.
3 Knowledge of mechanical and technical tools and equipment for making repairs.
4 Ability to read meters and determine issues.
5 Ability to perform technical work to maintain, repair, and adjust water meters.
6 Ability to safely operate, drive, and navigate City vehicles around a designated area.
7 Ability to create and draft accurate and professional reports.
8 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing
9 Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications
A Day in the Life of a Water Meter Technician!!!
Education
- High school diploma or GED.
One (1) year of experience in one (1) or more of the following:
- General mechanical areas (e.g., automotive/vehicle, small-engine, electrical OR HVAC, etc.)
- General construction (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical, concrete OR welding, etc.)
- General maintenance (e.g., building OR mechanical, etc.)
- Meter reading (any utilities)
- A current Class “D” Water or Wastewater License from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) will meet the education and experience requirements.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Must obtain a Class D Water License from the TCEQ within probationary period.
- May be required to obtain a Confined Space Entry certification from the TCEQ during probationary period depending on assignment.
- Availability to work various shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Must pass the background investigation and drug test.
