What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Leader II position at City of Dana Point?
Under general supervision assist in the coordination and implementation of recreation and community service programs and special events including monitoring and leading activities at the Community Center; preparing facility areas for Recreation programming and facility rentals; carrying out necessary maintenance to facilities; and performing related work as assigned.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
This a journey-level class within the Recreation Leader series and is typically a temporary part- time position in the Recreation Division which may require working weekends, holidays and/or evenings. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Recreation Leader I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned and by the level of experience attained. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Incumbents at this level may oversee the work of lower-level recreation staff. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Recreation Leader I level, or those incumbents with prior experience. Incumbents in this position have the ability to complete diverse tasks requiring applying established practices and procedures and utilizing creativity and enthusiasm.

Knowledge of philosophy, principles, practices and techniques of recreation programming. Areas of attention might focus on sports, arts & crafts, performing arts, special events, building maintenance or facility operation.
First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED methods. Methods and techniques of effective customer service.
Appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Principles and procedures of record keeping.
Ability to:
Act as a lead for lower-level staff. Maintain accurate records.
Work independently while overseeing facilities and user groups.
Interpret and follow City, departmental and division policies, laws, and rules. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
Work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays, at a variety of City facilities.
Analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action Lead participants in structured activities and motivate participating in programs.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, specifically the participants, parents, and co-workers.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or completion of a GED preferred.
One year of increasingly responsible experience in community services, recreational or cultural program implementation.

Good hearing is required when communicating on the telephone or in person.

The work environment described herein is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential function of this job. Primarily office environment with controlled temperature conditions and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Occasional field work where incumbent may be required to work on all types of floor surfaces, in a variety of facilities, in varying temperatures. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids while rendering First Aid and/or CPR
Note: All employees of the City of Dana Point are designated by both State law and City ordinance to be “Disaster Service Workers.” In the event of a declared emergency or an undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers. Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees’ normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.

- Provides support to programs, facility rentals and special events for Recreation; complete room set-up; take-down, and clean up for classes, activities, events, and meetings.
- May conduct a variety of recreation programs, including youth sports, arts & crafts, special events, tournaments and performing arts.
- Explains and enforces facility regulations, policies and procedures to participants; provides information in person and over the phone; positively interacts and communicates with the general public.
- Assist in the general safety and sanitation of facilities.
- Monitor facility use; open, close, and secure building for events.
- Collect fees for various activities; operate the cash register and provide receipts; balance and reconcile cash drawer.
- Assist with receiving park and facility rental requests.
- Notifies supervisors of any serious accident or emergency may administer first aid
- Performs other duties as assigned.
