Job OverviewDanbury Parks and Recreation is seeking a compassionate and skilled Camp Nurse to oversee the health and medical needs of campers aged 6-12 and staff at our youth summer camps. The Camp Nurse will provide first aid, manage medications, and respond to medical emergencies, ensuring a healthy and safe camp experience. This position is ideal for a licensed professional who enjoys working with children in an active, outdoor setting.
Key ResponsibilitiesHealth Care: Assess and treat minor injuries and illnesses (e.g., cuts, allergies, heat exhaustion) using first aid and basic medical techniques.
Medication Management: Administer and document camper and staff medications according to parental or physician instructions, maintaining secure storage.
Emergency Response: Provide immediate care in medical emergencies, coordinate with emergency services if needed, and inform the Site Director and parents.
Health Records: Maintain accurate health logs, including treatment records, incident reports, and camper medical forms, ensuring confidentiality.
Safety Collaboration: Work with Safety Advocates and leadership to address health-related risks, such as dehydration or communicable illnesses.
Education: Offer guidance to staff and campers on basic health practices, like hygiene, sun safety, and recognizing symptoms of distress.
Supply Oversight: Monitor and restock first aid kits and medical supplies, notifying the Site Director of needs or shortages.
Education & Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification required; valid Connecticut nursing license mandatory.
Experience: At least 1 year of nursing experience preferred, ideally with pediatric or emergency care exposure. Camp or school nursing experience is a plus.
Certifications: CPR and First Aid certification required; AED training preferred.
Skills: Strong assessment and decision-making skills, with the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
Physical Requirements: Ability to work outdoors, respond quickly to emergencies, and lift up to 25 lbs. if assisting a camper or staff member.
Background Check and Drug Screen: Must pass a drug screen, criminal background check and provide two professional references.
Warm and approachable demeanor with children and parents.
Organized and detail-oriented, especially with records and medications.
Ability to adapt to the fast-paced, informal camp environment.
Commitment to promoting a healthy and safe camp community.
