Description

Supervises seasonal employees in the maintenance of parks and trails. Provides direction and instruction on the use of equipment and the performance of maintenance duties. Directs and participates in grounds maintenance and minor building maintenance activities on parks, athletic fields, landscape, and trails.

The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description. The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.


  • Prepares athletic fields by supervising; measuring and setting bases and pitching mound; removing litter; performing safety checks; painting, dragging, edging, weeding, raking, packing mounds with clay; maintaining irrigation control system; mowing; preparing the infield by fertilizing; and seeding, repairing fences, and applying soil amendments.
  • Maintains parks, trails, and facilities by supervising; conducting safety checks; mowing, edging and trimming; applying herbicides and pesticides; performing tree work; removing leaves and litter; building retaining walls; maintaining and installing trash cans, tables and benches; cleaning and clearing the trails; performing minor building repairs; and planting plants.
  • Assists with special events by setting up equipment and furniture for special events; works assigned events; and cleans up after events.
  • Maintains equipment by inventorying, determining repair needs, following up with supervisor on repairs and submitting requests for additional equipment.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Directs and participates in event set up and clean up.
  • Reports as essential personnel for snow removal and other emergency response and ensures equipment availability.
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned.

Education and Experience
High School or GED and three to five years’ grounds maintenance experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above

Certifications/Licenses


  • First Aid/CPR
  • Chain saw
  • Forklift Operator
  • Pesticide Application
  • Playground Safety Inspector Certification issued by NRPA or similar organization.
  • Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record according to City criteria.

Job Knowledge
Intermediate knowledge to perform most work in normal situations. Comprehension of standard situations and includes knowledge of most of the significant aspects of the subject.

Reading
Basic: Ability to recognize meaning of common two- or three-syllable words.

Writing
Basic: Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.

Math
Intermediate: Ability to deal with a system of real numbers; and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement.

Communication Skills
Requires regular & routine interaction involving exchange and receipt of information.

Independence and Decision-Making
Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. The assignment is usually reviewed upon completion.

Technical Skills
Comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

Fiscal Responsibilities
No budgetary/fiscal responsibility.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Performs essentially the same work as those directed. Includes oversight of quality, training, instructing and scheduling work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS


  • Work requires heavy physical effort, exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
  • Adequate vision, hearing and talking to drive and communicate effectively with others.
  • Constant standing, walking, carrying, pushing/pulling, handling, and fine dexterity.
  • Frequent lifting, reaching, bending, twisting, and balancing.
  • Occasional sitting, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and climbing

NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is expected.
  • May experience frequent time pressure, change of tasks, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
  • May experience occasional irregular work schedule/overtime.
  • May rarely perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
Typically requires use of common office equipment, including computer and related software and hardware; groundskeeping and maintenance equipment such as trucks, mowers, trimmers, chain saw, blowers, turf cutter, chemical sprayer, tiller; saws, drills, hammers and any other equipment as appropriate or required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed in multiple locations including outdoors, the shop or a recreation center where there is frequent exposure to mechanical hazards and to occasional physical danger or chemical hazard. There is rare exposure to fire and electrical hazards.

The employee is expected to use hearing, hand and eye protection, steel toe boots and any other safety equipment as apparent or assigned.
