Description
Performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in a variety of public projects to construct, maintain and repair all streets, sanitary and storm sewers, cemeteries, landscape sites, greenhouse, and street rights-of-way.
The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description. The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.
- Assists with trimming and removing trees; maintaining greenhouse and landscaping; cutting grass and raking leaves; picking up litter; maintaining streets and rights of way.
- Assists with repairing city sewer and storm drains; replacing and installing sewer taps; cutting and clearing sewer out fall lines; operating sewer flusher and sewer camera truck; loading and unloading materials; digging trenches and ditches; cleaning catch basins, manholes and sewer lines; repairing, installing and maintaining water, sewer and gas lines.
- Assists with patching pot holes; repairing road shoulders; painting and marking traffic lines and replacing and refurbishing traffic signs and posts.
- Assists with maintaining cemeteries, setting up for funerals, and operating equipment in opening and closing of graves.
- Performs various custodial duties at parks, recreation, and related facilities; collecting leaves, brush, debris and other materials; placing and removing street barricades and other warning devices; and running errands, picking up and delivering supplies and materials.
- Supervises inmate crews as they mow, weed eat, and pick up litter on city right-of-way passages.
- Drives a passenger van towing a work trailer with equipment.
- Make repairs to lawn mowers and weed eaters as necessary.
- Assists with annual leaf collection.
- Applies pesticides. Determine treatment options, calculates quantities and calibrates equipment to perform the necessary tasks. Cleans equipment and area and logs information on applications.
- Provides emergency response during severe weather (snow, floods, storms, etc.).
- Performs on call duty as assigned.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED and up to one year of experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Certifications/Licenses
- Valid driver’s license (CDL Class A) with department/division required endorsements and acceptable driving record according to City criteria. (Note: When hired for Public Works a CDL Learner’s permit is required within 30 days of hire and a CDL license within 90 days of hire.)
- NIMS certification

Basic familiarity with the work to know common principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.
Reading

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This work is performed outdoors, where there is daily exposure to respiratory and physical hazards, extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity and noise and vibration. There is frequent exposure to mechanical hazards, and occasional exposure to chemical hazards and physical danger or abuse. There is rare exposure to electrical and fire hazards or explosives.
The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe shoes, etc.); and any other equipment as apparent or assigned.
