Description
The Sanitation Division of Public Works Department has openings for Motor Equipment Operator.
Performs responsible semi-skilled work operating automotive or mechanical equipment in the performance of a variety of public service work by the repair of all streets, water, sewer and gas lines; and the maintenance of landscape areas around the city. Operating trucks and smaller construction equipment and participates in the work, such as sawing, cutting, and digging; patching roads; locating and replacing water, sewer, and gas lines; and replacing failed storm drains. Removes leaf and snow, pours concrete and assists other crews with equipment maintenance.

When assigned to the Public Works Department:
- Works with crews engaged in grounds maintenance and street repair, operating a variety of equipment and performing manual labor.
- Cuts and trims grass, trims trees, and maintaining landscape areas.
- Participates in repairing road asphalt by digging out or grinding potholes/bad areas in the street; repairing low areas in the road; repairing road shoulders by fixing low or soft road shoulders with asphalt or rock; spreading grass seed and covering with straw.
- Loads and unloads dirt, stone, gravel, refuse.
- Repairs storm drains and drain boxes.
- Repairs drive ways by fixing low drive way aprons to keep cars from scraping; placing asphalt berms to help with water and erosion control.
- Transports crews engaged in repairs, maintenance, and litter collection.
- Performs seasonal work by collecting leaves; driving the dump truck and leaf vacuum trailer; picking up bags and brush and loose leaves.
- Responds to storms by removing snow from roads; driving the dump truck; cleaning snow removal equipment; removing downed trees and limbs; controlling traffic and repairing flood damaged roads; and providing emergency response during severe weather (snow, floods, storms, etc.).
- Performs miscellaneous duties such as special tasks for the voter registrations office by putting out ward identification signs and voting machines for every election; controlling traffic; setting out road signs at work zones and cones; helping other crews supporting special events; demolishing abandoned houses.
- Repairs light equipment, such as weed eaters, lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and chainsaws.
- Performs on call duty as assigned.
- May supervise inmate crew.
When assigned to the Utilities Department:
- Works with crews engaged in installation and maintenance of water and gas mains, operating a variety of equipment in accomplishing these duties; locates water and gas lines, making taps on live lines and repairing them; and assists with utility water and gas taps; Performs manual labor when not operating equipment.
- Operates dump truck, loads and unloads dirt, stone, gravel, utility pipe and other materials; operates a light truck in carrying tools; performs manual labor when not operating equipment.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED, and one to two years of experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above
Certifications/Licenses
- Valid Driver’s License (CDL-Class A) with acceptable driving record according to City Criteria. (Note: When hired for Public Works a CDL Learner’s permit is required within 30 days of hire and a CDL license within 90 days of hire.)
