What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Safety and Facility Monitor position at City of Danville?
Performs responsible work maintaining order, discipline, and positive public perception in and around Danville Public Library including inside the building as well as the parking area and outdoor seating areas. The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description. The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.
High School Diploma or GED and up to one year of experience; security experience preferred; public library, retail, or bookstore experience preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above
Certifications/Licenses
Basic familiarity with the work to know common principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.
Reading
Intermediate: Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, and thesauruses.
Writing
Intermediate: Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Math
Intermediate:Ability to deal with a system of real numbers; and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement.
Communication Skills
Requires providing basic information to others outside direct reporting relationships on procedures or general policies. Contact may require the consideration of different points of view to reach understanding and gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.
Independence and Decision-Making
Normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance reviewed periodically.

Work is semi-active, requiring occasional light physical exertion and periods of walking a multi-level facility. Requires adequate vision, hearing and talking to use a computer, telephone and communicating effectively with others.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is normally performed in an office setting. The employee is not exposed to environmental hazards and does not normally require the use of protective equipment.
- Conducts regular checks on the security of Danville Public Library’s building, parking lot, and grounds; works closely with library administration, supervisors, and staff to ensure order and enforce compliance with the library’s rules and regulations of acceptable use behavior; closes and secures the building nightly.
- Investigates complaints of uncooperative, disruptive user behavior and handles each situation appropriately; monitors problems with authority to recommend appropriate action regarding repeat offenders.
- Notifies library administration, supervisors, and Police in cases of serious discipline problems and completes appropriate reports; serves as a liaison with the Police Department.
- Notifies library administration and supervisors regarding incidents of unattended children.
- Assists library administration and programming staff in reserving Public Use spaces, maintaining room schedules, and assisting with set up and take down of room equipment.
- Conducts regular checks on facility conditions including parking lot and grounds and works as a liaison to Public Works and Parks and Recreation Maintenance staff to report any visible issues including but not limited to safety concerns, inoperable equipment, and general facility maintenance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Assists with maintaining the tidiness of the building by picking up trash, litter, and debris in and around the building.
- Maintains a positive and inviting environment by maintaining consistent engagement with library patrons and guests.
- Assists with maintaining order and crowd control in the event of an emergency situation including but not limited to acts of nature, power outages, or adverse safety conditions.
High School Diploma or GED and up to one year of experience; security experience preferred; public library, retail, or bookstore experience preferred.

Certifications/Licenses
- Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record according to City Criteria
- Must possess or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire certification in First Aid and CPR
